Quinnipiac Holds Off Morgan In Hokie Invitational Finale

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Aug. 26, 2023)--The Morgan State volleyball team wrapped up the Hokie Invitational with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) non-conference loss to Quinnipiac on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum.
 
Despite the loss, Morgan State put together its best offensive output of the weekend, finishing with 34 kills. Ainara Fernandes led the way with eight kills, while Makila Billingsley and Gabriela Hiciano added six and five kills, respectively.
 
Mya Karrick finished with a season-high 24 assists and Erin Carpenter led the way defensively with a team-high 11 digs. Jada Williams recorded a match-high five blocks to help the Bears to a 7.0-3.0 blocking advantage over Quinnipiac. It marked the second straight opponent that Morgan State out blocked, after tying host Virginia Tech with 4.0 blocks in the opener.
 
Quinnipiac (1-2) was led by Ginevra Giovagnoni, who finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs, both match highs. Damia Gunes also had a double-double, recording a match-high 26 assists and adding 10 digs. Yagmur Gunes totaled 10 kills and eight digs, while Fa'avae Kimsel Moe collected 10 digs.
 
Morgan State (0-3) will be at home next week as it co-hosts the Morgan/Towson Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 3).  It will be the first time that Morgan has hosted a tournament since the 2019 Morgan/Towson Invitational. All of Morgan State's matches will be played at home at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State will open the tournament and its home opener against crosstown rival Towson on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. On Friday, Dartmouth will take on Temple at 11 a.m. at Hill Field House, before the Bears will host Dartmouth at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Morgan State will face FDU (Fairleigh Dickinson) at 1 p.m., before taking on Rider at 6 p.m. The Bears will close out the tournament on Sunday, with a match against Temple at 1 p.m.
