Morgan State Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep Of Eagles

CARY, N.C. (April 29, 2023)--The Lady Bears completed a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader sweep of host North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Eagles 4-0 in the nightcap to spoil Senior and Alumni Day at Thomas Brooks Park. It was the ninth shutout victory against a MEAC foe this season.

Morgan State maintained its place atop the league standings with the victory and secured the No. 1 seed for the MEAC Championship (May 10-13) in Norfolk, Va.

The Lady Bears (24-19, 14-4 MEAC) also extended their winning streak to 10 straight over the Eagles dating back to the 2018 MEAC Championship Tournament.

Much like in Game 1, the Lady Bears were aggressive on the bases, finishing with five steals. Morgan State would conclude the day with a combined 12 steals in two games. Asia Thomas led the way with a total of six base thefts.

The Lady Bears got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning when Victoria Fletcher singled to left field to score Thomas.

Morgan State increased its lead to 2-0 when Mia Ewell doubled down the left field line in the second to bring Thomas across the plate for the second time in the game.

The guests, who finished with four runs on six hits, added two more in the fifth inning to round out the scoring. Madison Nunez singled to second base to bring home Ky'Anah Lake for the third run. Ewell later singled in the inning to score Nia Lewis for the 4-0 score.

Fletcher picked up the win to improve to 9-4 on the season. She pitched a complete game, scattering four hits, three walks and threw two strikeouts in seven innings.

Ewell finished 2-for-3 with 2RBI for Morgan. Nunez was 1-for-1 with a RBI and Fletcher went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Jaden Davis of North Carolina Central was charged with the loss and fell to 7-13 on the season. Davis went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Eagles.
