BRACKET
NORFOLK, Va. (May 10, 2023)—Top seeded Morgan State dropped its opener in the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship to No. 5 Coppin State, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
Morgan State (24-20) fell into the elimination bracket and will face the sixth-seeded Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday at 12 p.m. The Eagles, who earlier in the morning defeated defending champion Howard, advances to Thursday's semifinal at 6 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's North Carolina Central-Norfolk State game.
Coppin State's victories today marked the second time ever the Eagles (14-26) have won multiple tournament games and the first time since 2011.
The Eagles ended three scoreless innings to begin the game when Brissa Alvarado hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to give Coppin a 1-0 lead.
Morgan State used its aggressive base running to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
Alison Keener got things going when she doubled down the left field line.
Chandler Mitchell, who came in to pinch run for Keener, raced all the way from first to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Maia Wilkins.
Madison Nunez popped up to short, which allowed the speedy Mitchell to score and tie the game at 1-1.
However, Coppin State's Avianna Peterson would deliver what would be the game winner over the crosstown rivals, when she hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 victory.
Vanessa Carrizosa picked up the win for Coppin, her second of the day and improved to 13-12 on the season. Carrizosa surrendered one run on four hits and struck out four in seven innings of work.
Morgan State
Anaya Hunte (15-8) was charged with the loss. Hunte surrendered two runs on four hits and had a game-high six strikeouts.
