BALTIMORE, Md. (April 19, 2023)--The visiting George Washington Colonials completed a home-and-home season series sweep of Morgan State, following a 2-1 non-conference win on Wednesday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.
Â
The Colonials (14-22) ended a five-game losing skid with the victory, while the Lady Bears fell to 21-18 on the season and have now lost five of their last six games. The loss was just the third at home this season for Morgan in 11 contests, ending an eight-game home winning streak.
Â
Morgan State took a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Alison Keener reached base on a fielder's choice, which allowed
Anaya Hunte to score.
Â
GW, who also won the first meeting this season, 6-2 on March 15 in Washington, D.C., would respond with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 advantage. Arizona Ritchie singled up the middle to score Daniella Lew for the tying run and single up the middle hit by Ashley Corpuz later scored Ritchie for the go ahead run, which proved to be enough.
Â
Lew led the Colonials, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run. GW would finish the game with six hits. Rose Cano evened her record to 12-12 on the season with the victory. Cano pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on five Morgan hits, three walks and struck out three batters in seven innings.
Â
Morgan starting pitcher
Victoria Fletcher (7-4) went three innings in the loss. At the plate, Fletcher went 2-for-3 to lead the team.
Â
The Lady Bears will return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend, as they look to close out their league home slate on a winning note against the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State. Morgan State will battle S.C. State in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m., before closing out the series on Sunday, April 23 with a single game at 12 p.m. for Senior Day.
Â
Morgan State will honor its three seniors,
Deborah Hamilton,
Madison Nunez and
Asia Thomas prior to Sunday's start at Lois T. Murray Field.
