BALTIMORE, Md. (April 22, 2023)--The South Carolina State softball team was making its first visit to Morgan State's Lois T. Murray Field since the 2019 season, which it got swept and outscored 24-8 in a non-conference doubleheader.
Â
Saturday afternoon would be a different story, as the Lady Bears would fall to SC State, 5-3 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, Game 1 would end just minutes before a spring storm hit the Baltimore area. Game 2 was postponed until Sunday.Â
Â
It would be the Lady Bears first loss to the Bulldogs in the last four meetings. The last time Morgan State lost to SC State was a 4-2 decision during the 2021 season in the MEAC Round-Up, held in Orangeburg, S.C. Morgan State would go on to win the MEAC title that year.
Â
The Bulldogs (6-26, 5-9 MEAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead when starting pitcher Destiny Calloway homered to left center to give the guests the lead in the first inning.
Â
Morgan State (21-19, 11-4 MEAC) got two runs back in the second inning to pull within 3-2.
Ky'Anah Lake singled up the middle to score
Anaya Hunte and
Asia Thomas followed with a single through the left side to score
Nia Lewis for the second run.
Â
The score would remain that way until the sixth inning when reached on a bunt single and coupled by a throwing error by the third baseman, Lake would score the tying run to make it a 3-3 game.
Â
However, the Bulldogs would reclaim the lead for good in the very next inning when Amarie Gist singled to second base to bring home two runs and give SC State the 5-3 advantage.
Â
Calloway (1-0) would get the win, surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks in four innings. Zarria Smith earned her first save of the season. She tallied four strikeouts in three innings of work.
Â
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Calloway, who finished 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and a game-high 3RBI. Taylor Ames-Alexander was also 1-for-3 with a run and walk, while Kayla Leslie went 1-for-3 with a run. Gist finished with 2RBI on 1-for-3 at the plate.
Â
Lake and Lewis both went 1-for-2 and scored a run. Lake also walked and an RBI.
Â
Hunte was charged with the loss and fell to 13-8 on the season. She allowed four runs on six hits and two walks, while throwing a game-high seven strikeouts over six innings.
Â
Morgan State and South Carolina State will close out the series on Sunday, April 23 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday's contest will mark Senior Day for the Lady Bears. Morgan State will honor its three seniors (
Deborah Hamilton,
Madison Nunez and
Asia Thomas) between games.
