Lady Bears Complete Series Sweep Of Coppin, 8-0 In Six Innings

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 19, 2022)-Victoria Fletcher went 2-for-4 with a game-high 3RBIs, while Melissa Paz and Madison Nunez each were 2-for-3, as Morgan State defeated host Coppin State, 8-0 in six innings on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Field.

The Lady Bears, who improved to 12-11 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), completed the series sweep and have now won eight straight over their rivals. Coppin State fell to 2-12, 0-3 MEAC.

Morgan State got on the board in the second inning when Nunez singled to right field, scoring Maia Wilkins. Anaya Hunte flied out to centerfield, which allowed Mia Ewell to cross the plate for a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Bears added a run in the third when Deborah Hamilton singled to center to bring in Asia Thomas. Morgan extended its lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the fourth. Alison Keener flied out to centerfield to score Nunez and Fletcher singled up the middle to score Anaya Hunte.

Morgan State closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth inning with three runs. Fletcher doubled down the left field line to score Sarah Tuzinski and Thomas. Fletcher then scored the final run on a double hit to left center by Paz.

Hunte (7-5) picked up her second victory of the weekend, surrendering three hits and striking out five in six innings of work.

Coppin State's Vanessa Carrizosa fell to 2-5 on the season.

Morgan State's originally scheduled non-conference doubleheader against Bowie State on Wednesday, March 22 has been canceled. So, the Lady Bears will be off until next weekend when they welcome Norfolk State for a three-game MEAC series (March 25-26) at Lois T. Murray Field for the Lady Bears' conference home opener. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while the series will conclude on Sunday at noon.

The Norfolk State Spartans (10-11, 2-1 MEAC) are coming off an 11-3 five-inning victory over defending MEAC champion Howard on Sunday in a game that was live on ESPNU. The win was the second straight and helped the Spartans claim the series, 2-1.
