The short story: Tyler Tejada had 15 points to help Towson defeat Morgan State 67-58 and snap a 3-game losing streak on Sunday night at TU Arena.
OPENING TIP
- Tejada, freshman from Teaneck, N.J., finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting and added three rebounds to lead four Tigers in double-figures.
- Redshirt freshman guard Dylan Williamson scored 10 points (4-9 FG) in 25 minutes. Charles Thompson, a graduate student 6-7 forward, added a game-high 10 rebounds and 10 points with three blocked shots in 34 minutes. Chase Paar added 10 points with five boards in 17 minutes off the bench.
- Redshirt junior guard Kamron Hobbs 5-10 guard paced the Bears with 11 points and connected on 4-of-6 free throws in 32 minutes off the bench.
- Junior guard Amahrie Simpkins chipped in 10 points with six rebounds in 33 minutes. Sophomore guard Kiran Oliver and redshirt-senior guard Winston Tabbs added 8 points apiece.
THE DIFFERENCE
- Towson connected on 42 percent of their shots from the field and 31.3 percent from behind the arc while the Bears shot 39 percent from the field and connected on 5 of 15 (.333) 3-pointers.
- Morgan shot .733 (11-15) from the free throw line, compared to the Tigers' .600 percent (12-20).
- The Tigers outscored the Bears in the paint by a commanding 38-24 margin.
- Towson dominated the paint outrebounding the Bears 47-29, including a 21-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
- Morgan scored 9 points off of forcing 14 Towson turnovers.
- Amahrie Simpkins scored on a layup to give Morgan a 9-7 lead during the early going, it ended up being the Bears' only lead of the contest. Towson responded with a jump hook in the paint by Charles Thompson to spark a 7-2 run. A layup by Dylan Williamson gave Towson a 16-11 lead with 11:38 remaining.
- Towson dominated the paint to lead 41-29 at halftime.
- Chase Paar would spark a 6-0 run with a thunderous dunk that was capped by a Charles Thompson steal and dunk to force a Morgan timeout.
- The Tigers would continue to extend their lead, going up by as many as 12 in the first half. Paar would lead the Tigers at the break with 10 points after Towson ended the half on an 8-0 run holding Morgan scoreless over the last 2:58 to lead 41-29.
- Both teams would exchange baskets early on in the second half but it was the Bears who put together a 6-0 run to cut the Tiger lead to just seven.
- Christian May would find his shooting stroke, drilling back-to-back triples in the right corner to give Towson their largest lead of the game at 14 with nine to go.
- Morgan would cut the Tiger lead to single digits with four to go, but Tejada hit a big layup to extend the lead back to double digits.
- The Bears would cut into the deficit late but the Tigers held off Morgan for a 67-58 win on Sunday.
NOTABLE
- Wynston Tabbs was ejected for hitting a Tigers player with the Bears trailing 35-29 with 1:49 remaining in the first half.
- The win improves Towson's series record against Morgan to 18-14.
