The short story: Jahsean Corbett scored 18 points and added eight rebounds and four steals as Chicago State held off Morgan State, 84-83, to take third place in the Cancun Challenge Mayan Division tournament on Wednesday.
OPENING TIP
- Corbett, a junior 6-foot-7 forward, went 6-for-14 for 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight boards with four steals in 32 minutes.
- Junior guard Wesley Cardet Jr. scored 14 points with four steals. Brent Davis and Kedrick Green added 14 and 11 points, respectively for the Cougars.
- Senior guard Wynston Tabbs paced the Bears with a game-high 23 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in minutes.
- Junior guard Amahrie Simpkins came off the bench and scored a season-high 22 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with five boards in 36 minutes.
- Redshirt junior guard Kamron Hobbs scored 11 points (3-6 3FG).
THE DIFFERENCE
- Morgan connected on 53.8 percent of their shots from the field and 35.3 percent (6-17) from behind the arc while the Cougars shot 50.9 percent from the field and was held to 3 of 13 (.231) on 3-pointers.
- Morgan was 7-for-13 (.538) from the stripe, compared to the Chicago State's .692 percent (27-39).
- The teams battled to almost a standstill, before a turnover by Christian Oliver led to a fast break layup by Brent Davis to cap a 6-0 run by the Cougars. Chicago State entered the halftime break with a 45-39 lead.
- Wesley Cardet scored a layup to give the Cougars an 83-80 lead, but the Bears answered when Wynston Tabbs scored a deep 3-pointer to knot the game at 83-83 with 20 seconds left. Kiran Oliver fouled Crawford with 14 seconds to go and he ended up splitting a pair of free throws to give the Cougars a 84-83 advantage.
- Kedrick Green fed Wesley Cardet for a two-handed dunk to give the Cougars its largest lead of the half at 69-61 with 9:01 remaining.
- Morgan's coach Kevin Broadus called a timeout with 3.3 seconds remaining to setup a final play. Morgan's go-to man, Wynston Tabbs, got the ball and pulled up for a contested jumper near the free throw line, the ball grazed the front rim as the horn sounded.
- The Bears finished the contest with 11 assists.
- Chicago State outrebounded Morgan 33-32.
- Morgan scored 12 points off of forcing 9 Cougar turnovers, while Chicago State scored 14 points off of 19 Bear turnovers.
- The Cougars outscored the Bears by an 14-12 margin in fastbreak points.
- The contest had six lead changes and six ties.

- The matchup marked the first meeting between the teams.
- Wynston Tabbs was named to the 2023 Mayan Division All-Tournament Team ... Tabbs scored 54 points (27 avg) and shot 52 percent (21-40) from the field in the two-game tournament.
