The short story: Chandler Turner scored 17 points and added eight rebounds as Radford held off Morgan State, 82-72, in the first game of the Cancun Challenge Mayan Division tournament on Tuesday.
OPENING TIP
- Turner, a Bowling Green transfer, went 5-for-7 for 13 points in the first half, matching his season high which he previously set against Marshall. He'd go on to surpass it in the second half, just missing a second double-double this year.
- Junior forward Justin Archer scored 12 points with 10 rebounds. Bryan Antoine and Truth Harris added 11 points apiece for the Highlanders.
- Senior guard Wynston Tabbs paced the Bears with a game- and career-high 31 points and shot 11-for-19 from the floor and 3-pointers and added five boards 31 minutes.
- Redshirt senior forward Will Thomas scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and finished with a team-high seven rebounds. Amahrie Simpkins came off the bench and added nine points with six boards in 23 minutes.
THE DIFFERENCE
- Morgan connected on 55.7 percent of their shots from the field and 40.9 percent (9-22) from behind the arc while the Wolves shot 31.3 percent from the field and connected on 6 of 20 (.300) 3-pointers.
- Morgan shot .722 (13-18) from the free throw line, compared to the Cheyney's .286 percent (4-14).
- Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end, combining for 16 fouls and 12 turnovers in the first half alone. The Highlanders took a 37-29 lead into the halftime break
- The score read 29-23 with exactly three minutes to go in the period before back-to-back three-pointers from Kenyon Giles and Chandler Turner gave Radford the clear momentum. A big stop on the defensive end then led to a Giles turnaround jumper, making it 37-23 in favor of the Highlanders, forcing a MSU timeout.
- Wynston Tabbs and Will Thomas kept the Bears in it until the very end, when an Antoine steal followed by two clutch free throws sealed the victory.
- The Bears finished the contest with 7 assists.
- Morgan outrebounded Radford 37-36.
- Morgan scored 11 points off of forcing 11 Radford turnovers.
- Morgan outscored the Highlanders by an 12-3 margin in fastbreak points.
- Morgan State's first and final lead of the game came at the 18:39 mark of the first half when the score was 3-2.
