Morgan State Women’s Basketball To Host Youth Education Day Thursday

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 15, 2023)--The Morgan State athletics department will hold its second Morgan State University Youth Education Day "Building Bridges – Pathways to Education" event of the year and first with the women's basketball program, when the Lady Bears welcome Notre Dame of Maryland to Hill Field House on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.

560 local third through sixth graders are expected to be in attendance on Thursday. The youth will be greeted by Morgan State mascot Benny the Bear and received a brief history of The National Treasure by student-athletes and Early Education majors, learn the Bear Chant and Bear Dance and watch the game. Snacks will be provided by the campus food resource center.

"Morgan State Athletics, Youth Education Day "Building Bridges - Pathways to Education" was born from a conversation Sterling Steward, Senior Associate Athletics Director/Chief Revenue Officer and I had about wanting to truly impact local youth and introduce them to Morgan State University at an earlier age than high school," said M. Burton Cornish, Jr., Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development. "He then asked me to assist in forming a team of internal and external stakeholders to bring the vision forward."

Added Cornish, "providing events of this caliber are made possible through the passion of many, and the desire to give back to our youth from organizations such as McDonald's and the Office of Mayor Brandon M. Scott, who are providing financial assistance and transportation to and from the local schools for the kids."

The inaugural Education Day was held earlier this year during the volleyball season for the Bowie State contest (Sept. 19), where Morgan State hosted over 150 local third through fifth graders.
