Hobbs' 21 Leads Bears Past Penn State Wilkes Barre, 78-60

The short story:  Kamron Hobbs had 21 points, five assists and three steals to lead the Bears to a 78-60 win over Penn State Wilkes Barre on Sunday afternoon.

OPENING TIP

  • Hobbs, a redshirt-junior from Stockbridge, Ga., finished with a game-high 21 points and five assists and three steals to lead five Bears in double-figures. He connected on 7-of-10 from the field and buried 5-of-8 from beyond the arc help the Bears secure back-to-back victories.
  • Redshirt senior forward Myles Thompson scored 15 points (6-16 FG) with eight boards and two steals in 29 minutes. Junior guard Kiran Oliver had 13 points (4-4 FG) and five rebounds off the bench and Christian Oliver added 13 points with five boards. 
  • Senior forward Will Thomas put together a solid floor performance as he was just shy of a double-double. He finished the game with 10 rebounds and a game-high eight assists, including a blocked shot and a steal in 40 minutes.
  • Jalen Willis paced the Lions with 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field. He also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 33 minutes.
  • Teequan Holley scored 15 points and led the Lions on the glass with eight boards. Anton Berga chipped in 14 points off the bench (5-10 FG).

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Morgan connected on 48.3 percent of their shots from the field and 30.4 percent (7-23) from behind the arc while the Lions shot 35.8 percent from the field and connected on just 4 of 14 (.286) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .789 (14-17) from the free throw line, compared to the PSUWB's .800 percent (8-10).
  • Hobbs buried his fourth 3-pointer of the day to help give the Bears 21-9 lead during the early going. Kiran Oliver scored on a layup to give the Bears their largest lead of the half at 24-9 with 9:32 remaining in the half. 
  • The Bears led 28-13 before Rashod Ballard scored on a fast break layup to help ignite a 14-4 run by the Lions over a 4-minute stretch. Jalen Willis knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the Bears' lead to 32-27 at the 1:30 mark. Morgan would go into the break with a 36-29 advantage.
  • PSUWB started the halftime with a 3-pointer by Willis, followed by a layup by Teequan Holley trim Morgan's lead to 36-34. Hobbs' hit his fifth 3-pointer of the night to give the Bears a 48-40 lead with 14:12 remaining, but the Lions would not go away. Teequan Holley scored four points during an 10-2 run by the Lions and a 3-point play by Jedediah Ashton and a fast break layup by Rashad Ballard tied the game at 50 with 7:32 left. Morgan called a timeout.
  • Following the timeout, Hobbs scored a basket to help jumpstart a 14-0 run by the Bears. Myles Thompson hit a pair of free throws to give Morgan a 64-50 lead with 3:24 remaining. 
  • The Bears finished with 17 assists.
  • Morgan held a 41-37 rebounding margin and scored 34 points in the paint.
  • Morgan scored 15 points off of forcing 15 PSUWB turnovers.
  • The Lions outscored the Bears by a 18-12 margin in fastbreak points.
  • A corner 3-pointer by Kiran Oliver with 36 seconds left gave the Bears their final score of 78-60. 

NOTABLE

  • The win counted in the boxscore for the Bears, while the game was recorded as an exhibition for the Lions.
