The short story: Donovan Yapp., Jr. had 23 points, five assists and three steals to lead Fresno State (2-1) to a 87-66 win over Morgan State (2-2) on Thursday night at Save Mart Arena.
OPENING TIP
- Yapp, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., scored a game-high 23 on 8-of-10 shooting in Fresno State's dominating win over Morgan. He also added four boards and three assists to lead four Bulldogs in double-figures.
- Senior guard Isaiah Hill scored 17 points (7-15 FG) with five rebounds and a game-high seven assists in 40 minutes. Xavier Dusell and Enoch Boakye added 10 points apiece.
- Senior forward Eduardo Andre fouled out of the game (8:09) with five boards and five points.
- Junior guard Amahrie Simpkins led the Bears with 17 points (8-16 FG) off the bench for Morgan and added five boards.
Redshirt-senior guard Wynston Tabbs scored in 16 points (5-12 FG) with three board and two assists.
- Redshirt senior forward Myles Thompson finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with five rebounds in 29 minutes.
THE DIFFERENCE
- Fresno State connected on 54 percent of their shots from the field and 45 percent (9-20) from behind the arc while the Bears shot 37 percent from the field and connected on 6 of 18 (33%) 3-pointers.
- Morgan shot .710 (12-17) from the free throw line, compared to Fresno State's .500 percent (8-16).
- The Bears led 4-1 lead before Xavier Dusell hit a jumper to help ignite a 16-4 run by the Bulldogs over a 5-minute stretch. Enoch Boakye finished with a dunk to give the Bulldogs a 17-8 lead at the 12:54 mark. Amharie Simpkins kept the Bears within striking distance, but a late run punctuated with a dunk by Isaac Tavares and a 3-pointer by Isaiah Hill in the final seconds gave Fresno State 43-26 lead at the break.
- Morgan started the second half with a 3-pointer by Will Thomas, but the Bulldogs responded with an 7-3 spurt and Donovan Yapp's converted a 3-point play to give the Bulldogs a 20-point cushion (52-32) with 16:44 remaining. Fresno State held its largest lead of the night when Isaiah Hill hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 27 - it also marked Hill's 1,000th point of his career.
- The Bears had zero assists in the first half and finished the night with four assists.
- Fresno State won the rebounding battle 46-33, and held a 44-38 advantage in points in the paint.
