Johnson Named To MEAC Preseason Second Team; Lady Bears Picked Third

NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 26, 2023)--The Morgan State women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, announced by the conference office today. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Gabrielle Johnson was named to the Preseason All-MEAC second team, presented by TowneBank.
 
The preseason poll and preseason teams were released during Thursday's MEAC Basketball Media Day, which was broadcast on ESPN+.
 
All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.

Morgan State, which finished second a season ago, received one first-place vote and 86 points. Defending MEAC regular season and tournament champion Norfolk State was picked as the preseason favorite. The Spartans earned 12 of 16 first-place votes and 115 points. Howard was second with two first-place votes and 114 points. Maryland Eastern Shore received one first-place vote and 67 points for fourth, while Coppin State (64 points) and North Carolina Central (54 points), were fifth and sixth, respectively. Delaware State (43 points) and South Carolina State (19 points) rounded out the predicted order of finish.


 
Howard senior guard Destiny Howell, the reigning MEAC Player and the 2022 MEAC Basketball Tournament Outstanding Performer, was named the MEAC Player of the Year.
 
Johnson garnered MEAC All-Rookie Team honors last season. The 5-foot-8 native of Baltimore, Md., played in all 29 games, making six starts. She averaged 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 19.6 minutes per game in her first season at Morgan State. Johnson reached double figures in scoring six times, including a career-high 21 points twice at North Carolina Central and at Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
A one-time MEAC Rookie of the Week selection last season, Johnson shot 38% (51-of-134) from the field and connected on 67% (43-of-64) from the free throw line. She finished third on the team in assists (56) and was fifth in steals (33). Johnson ranked 12th among MEAC leaders in assists and 20th in steals.
 
The Lady Bears, who begin the 2023-24 campaign playing their first four games at home, will host Washington Adventist in the season opener on Monday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House.
 
The 2024 MEAC Basketball Tournament will be held March 13-16 at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
