Bears Outlasted by #10 N.C. Central

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 19, 2023) -- The Bears entered tonight's contest coming off a 2-week break, but gave #10 ranked North Carolina Central all it could handle in a nationally televised game at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan (1-5, 0-1) came up short as they suffered a 16-10 loss to the Eagles. NCCU improved to 6-1 overall, but more importantly sit at 1-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

The Bears managed to scrap together a game-high 285 yards on 57 plays against NCCU, but struggled to get the ball in the end zone for much of the game.

Morgan quarterback Dominique Anthony had a steady game and completed 17 of 28 passes for 167 yards, including an interception and a touchdown pass.

NCCU's Davius Richard, the top quarterback in the league, finished with 122 passing yards on 16 of 30 completions. He was also limited to 29 yards on the ground.

The passing game had its moments against Morgan, but the Eagles run game barely made a mark. NCCU rushed for 79 yards on 33 attempts for an average 2.4 yards per carry.

Morgan scored on its opening drive after picking up 60 yards on 14 plays including a 17-yard pass by Anthony to Demier Shipley. The Bears drove to the NCCU 15, but had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Beckett Leary.

It was a defensive struggle throughout the rest of the first half.

Trailing the Bears 3-0 at halftime, NCCU quarterback Davius Richard engineered a 10 play, 39-yard drive that culminated in a 39-yard field goal by Adrian Olivo to knot the game with 9:03 remaining the third quarter.

The Eagles took advantage of Morgan miscues to help break the game open.

Morgan was driving deep into NCCU territory before Anthony had his pass intercepted by Jason Chambers who raced 44 yards before being tackled by wideout Andre Crawley on the Bears' 35 late in the third quarter. The Eagles capitalized when Richard tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tynez Warner. The extra point by Olivo gave the Eagles their first lead of the night.

On the Bears second possession in the fourth quarter, the Bears ran a reverse with Kwincy Hall who broke off a 14-yard run before he was hit by Manny Smith and fumbled. The Eagles recovered the ball near midfield. Once again, the Eagles scored off the Bears turnover, this time behind a 22-yard field goal by Olivo to take a 13-3 lead.

Morgan's next drive ended when they turned the ball over on downs when they failed to convert a 4th and 2 from their own 40. NCCU's ensuing drive stalled out at the Bears' 24, but not before a 41-yard field goal by Olivo put the Eagles back on the scoreboard to extend the lead to 16-3 with 1:44 remaining.

The Bears scored in the final moments of the game when Anthony connected with Joseph Owumi for a 40-yard touchdown strike. The extra point by Beckett Leary left the Bears trailing 16-10 with 33 seconds left to go.

Morgan's ensuing onside kick attempt bounced out of bounds as the Eagles proceeded to finish off the game in victory formation.

Erick Hunter paced the Morgan State defense with 11 tackles, including seven solos and a tackle for loss. Sam Alsheimer added six stops and a sack.

Morgan held the Eagles to their fewest points scored since suffering a 59-7 loss to FBS #24 UCLA on Sept. 16.

Morgan will look to pick up next week when it travels to Norfolk State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
