Miller, Burke Lead Bears 89-52 Victory over Goucher

Malik Miller scored a game-high 26 points with 17 rebounds and five steals.

The short story: Senior guard Malik Miller scored a game-high 26 points with 17 rebounds and five assists as Morgan State defeated Goucher, 89-52, in non-conference action Saturday night at Hill Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to a 6-8 overall record and remain unbeaten at home with a 4-0 mark.

OPENING TIP
  • Miller connected on 11-of-22 from the floor and scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first half.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke added 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc with four assists and three steals in 31 minutes.
  • Graduate student Lewis Djonkam finished with 12 points (5-8 FG) and redshirt sophomore Will Thomas added 12 points with three assists and two blocked shots. 
  • Toto Fagbenle chipped in 4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, two blocks and two steals in 21 minutes.
  • John Dixon and Onterio Miller scored 13 points apiece to lead the Gophers. Dixon was 5-of-8 from the field and went 3-for-3 from downtown, while Miller was also perfect from 3-point territory (3-3 3FG) and shot 5-of-6 from the floor. Darrell Green had 8 points (4-9 FG) with three assists.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Bears outscored the Hawks 9-0 thru the first 4 minutes of action.
  • Goucher closed the gap behind a 5-0 spurt and a free throw by Jacob Moore cut the Bears lead to 9-5 - it was the closest the Gophers would be all night.
  • Lewis Djonkam scored on a layup to help ignite a 13-2 run capped by a Miller layup to extend the Bears lead to 22-10 with just under 10 minutes remaining. 
  • Onterio Miller hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 24-17, but the Bears responded as Miller scored 13 points during a 25-0 run and went into the intermission leading 49-17. 
  • Morgan held its largest lead of the night after Isaiah Burke buried his fourth 3-pointer to give the Bears a 71-31 lead with 10:10 remaining in the game.
  • Goucher, a member of the Landmark Conference (CAA) and NCAA Division III, committed 22 turnovers that led to 27 points by the Bears. 
  • Morgan shot .818 (9-11) from the free throw line, while the Gophers finished 3-for-8 (.375) from the stripe.
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Gophers by a commanding 44-23 margin.
  • Morgan shot .529 (36-of-68) from the field, compared to Goucher's .389 (21-of-54). The Gophers shot .467 (7-15) from beyond the arc, while the Bears connected on 8-of-21 (.381) from 3-point range.
  • Morgan scored 50 points inside the paint.
NOTABLE
  • Wednesday night's game improved Morgan's home record to 4-0 this season.
  • Malik Miller collected his sixth double-double of the season and he matched his career-high with 17 rebounds ... he grabbed 17 boards against Delaware State on Feb. 6, 2021 at Hill Field House.
  • Miller currently sits at No. 7 among Morgan's all-time leading rebounders with 740 rebounds in 113 games ... Miller is just two boards shy of Phil Carr who  ranks No. 6 all-time with 734 rebounds in 86 games (2015-18).
