Morgan State men's basketball win an overtime thriller vs. N.C. Central 78-73

The Bears secure their first win against the Eagles since 2012.

The short story: Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a game-high 28 points and Morgan State battled all game long and eventually came away with a 78-73 win that featured overtime against North Carolina Central, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night at Hill Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to a 7-8 overall record, 1-0 in conference play and remain unbeaten at home with a 5-0 mark.

OPENING TIP
  • Burke connected on 9-of-14 from the floor and shot 6-of-9 from 3-point territory in 42 minutes of action.
  • Senior guard Malik Miller added 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds with five assists.
  • Graduate student Lewis Djonkam finished with a season-high 15 points (6-8 FG), five boards, five assists and three blocked shots. Redshirt sophomore Will Thomas finished with a game-high eight rebounds to go along with 8 points off the bench. 
  • Freshman guard Kamron Hobbs chipped in 10 and three boards in 30 minutes. 
  • Kris Monroe led the Eagles with 19 points (7-13 F) and had four rebounds. Brendan Medley-Bacon and Justin Wright each finished with 13 points and five rebounds apiece. 
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Burke hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 69-69, but the Eagles responded when Eric Boone fed Dan Oladapo for a layup to take a 71-69 lead with 1:16 remaining in overtime ... it turned out to be the Eagles last lead of the game.  
  • After a mad scramble for a loose ball, Burke ended up connecting on a corner 3-pointer to put the Bears back ahead with just under a minute remaining in the extra session Rob Lawson converted a pair of free throws and Burke split a pair to extend the lead to 75-71 with 17 seconds to go.
  • NCCU's Ja'Darius Harris raced the length of the floor to finish with a layup to cut the lead with 9 seconds to go, but the Bears would go on to salt the game away from the free throw line and got a pair of crowd pleasing blocked shots by Collin Nnamene to put a stamp on the win.
  • The Bears outscored the Eagles 13-8 in overtime.
  • Justin Wright hit a jumper to help ignite a 17-6 run and Ja'Darius Harris buried a 3-pointer to give NCCU its largest lead of the night at 63-56 with 3:40 remaining in regulation. 
  • Malik Miller scored on a feed from Djonkam Lewis to help the Bears breakout on a 7-0 spurt capped by a Miller layup to give the Bears a 65-63 lead with 38 seconds remaining ... Brendan Medley-Bacon hit a pair of clutch free throws down the stretch and Isaiah Burke missed on a 3-pointer in the closing moments to send the game into overtime tied at 65-65. 
  • The teams played to practically a stalemate in the first half as NCCU went into the break with a 32-30 lead ... Burke paced the Bears with 14 points and was a blistering 4-for-6 from deep, while NCCU's Kris Monroe went into halftime with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field.  
  • Kamron Hobbs buried back-to-back 3-pointers as part of an 11-0 run to help give Morgan its largest lead of the night at 43-36 with 15:43 remaining in regulation. 
  • Morgan shot .720 (18-25) from the free throw line, while the Eagles finished 12-for-16 (.750) from the stripe.
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Eagels by a 39-30 margin.
  • Morgan shot .441 (26-of-59) from the field, compared to NCCU's .474 (27-of-57). The Bears shot .400 (8-20) from beyond the arc, while the Eagles connected on 7-of-20 (.350) from 3-point range.
  • Morgan held a 23-10 advantage in second chance scoring.
NOTABLE
  • Wednesday night's game improved Morgan's home record to 5-0 this season.
  • The Bears improve to 2-1 in games decided by overtime this season ... they previously beat Utah Valley (73-72) on Nov. 18 at the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic and lost to Loyola Marymount (81-80) on Nov. 23 
  • Isaiah Burke collected his sixth game of scoring 20 or more points this season.
  • Prior to tonight's game, the Eagles had won the last 11 meetings with the Bears since Jan. 28, 2013 ... Morgan recorded its first win against NCCU since January 23, 2012 when Larry Bastfield led the Bears with a game-high 20 points to lead the Bears a 71-64 win at Hill Field House ... NCCU leads the series between the schools 55-41.
