Bears Comeback Falls Short at Delaware State, 64-62

The short story: Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Bears, but Delaware State guard Martaz Robinson hit the game-winning basket on a 12-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to give the Hornets a 64-62 victory over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference thriller in Memorial Hall. 

OPENING TIP
  • Burke led three double-figure scorers for Morgan with a game-high 18 points, highlighted by five 3-pointers on nine attempts. 
  • Kamron Hobbs led the reserves with 12 points off the bench and connected on 4-of-6 from the three and dished out four assists.
  • Daiquan Copeland chipped in 11 points (4-10 FG) and led the Bears with eight rebounds to go along with three assists. 
  • Martaz Robinson led the way for the Hornets with 17 points and four rebounds, while Brandon Stone added 12 points (5-11 FG) with seven boards, two steals and two blocks off the bench. 

THE DIFFERENCE
  • Morgan held a 30-29 lead at the break, but the Hornets took control of the game in the second half, leading as many as 11 points. 
  • Morgan clawed back, and tied the game at 62-62 when Copeland fed Isaiah Burke for a corner 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to play.
  • After a Delaware State time out, the Hornets worked the clock to set up Robinson for the game-winner from the left side of the hoop. The Bears had the final possession, but committed a turnover as time expired. 
  • Morgan shot .533 (8-15) from the free throw line, while the Hornets finished 6-for-10 (.600) from the stripe.
  • The Bears were out-rebounded by the Hornets by a 39-33 margin.
  • Morgan shot .396 (21-of-53) from the field, compared to DSU's .444 (28-of-63). The Bears shot .545 (12-22) from beyond the arc, while the Hornets were held to just 2-for-14 (.143) from long range.
  • DSU held a 16-8 advantage in second chance scoring.
  • The Hornets outscored Morgan in the paint by a 36-12 margin.
  • DSU scored 19 points off 17 Morgan turnovers.
NOTABLE
  • The Bears are 11-10 overall and are 4-1 record in conference play. 
  • DSU has now won two games in a row to improve to 3-16 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC.
  • The victory gave DSU its first two-game win streak since defeating Howard (100-88) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (68-64) during the 2019-20 season. 
  • Saturday's game dropped Morgan's road record to 2-8 this season...it also marked the Hornets first win against Morgan since March 6, 2021.
  • Tonight marked the 108th meeting between the teams -- Morgan leads the series 64-44.
  • The Bears will face Delaware State again next Saturday (Feb. 4) in the Michael B. Jordan Led HBCU Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. (1:00 p.m.)
NEXT UP
Morgan will host the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore (12-8, 5-1) on Monday night at Hill Field House. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST) and will mark 'White Out' night for the Bears.
