Bears Can't Overcome Second Half Surge by UMES

The short story: Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Bears, but UMES forward Nathaniel Pollard Jr. scored 22 points as Morgan was unable to hold off a second half surge as the Hawks pulled away with a 72-58 victory over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at Hill Field House.

OPENING TIP
  • Burke was the only one to score in double-figures tonight for Morgan as he finished 10-for-21 from the floor, including three 3-pointers on eight attempts. 
  • Daiquan Copeland chipped in 9 points (4-9 FG) and had three assists. David McCullough and Lewis Djonkam scored 8 points apiece.
  • Collin Nnamene recorded a game-high six blocked shots and three boards for the Bears.
  • Pollard led the way for the Hawks with 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 23 minutes, while Kevon Voyles added 17 points (4-5 3FG) with three boards and three assists. 
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Morgan trailed a 35-34 at the break, but the Hawks took control of the game early in the second half behind a 9-0 run. Voyles connected on a 3-pointer to give UMES a 44-34 lead. 
  • Daiquan Copeland scored on a jumper to cut the Hawks lead to 44-36, but it was as close as the Bears would get as UMES surged on a 15-4 run capped by a 3-pointer by Kohen Thompson to give the Hawks a 59-42 lead. 
  • The Hawks held its largest lead of the night after a jumper by Pollard put UMES ahead by 19 (68-49) with under 5 minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Morgan shot .800 (12-15) from the free throw line, while the Hawks finished 9-for-14 (.643) from the stripe.
  • The Bears were out-rebounded by the Hawks by a 49-25 margin.
  • Morgan shot .368 (21-of-57) from the field, compared to UMES's .458 (27-of-59). The Bears shot .222 (4-18) from beyond the arc, while the Hawks were 9-for-21 (.429) from long range.
  • UMES held a 15-6 advantage in second chance scoring.
  • The Hawks bench outscored Morgan by a 20-12 margin.
  • MSU scored 20 points off 19 UMES turnovers.
NOTABLE
  • The Bears are 11-11 overall and are 4-2 record in conference play.
  • UMES sits atop the MEAC standings at 6-1 and improved to 13-8 overall.
  • The victory extended the Hawks to a 6-game winning streak.
  • Monday's game dropped Morgan's home record to 8-1 this season...it also marked the Hawks first win against Morgan since Jan. 31, 2022.
  • Tonight marked the 96th meeting between the teams -- Morgan leads the series 56-40.
