CARY, N.C. (April 29, 2022)--The Lady Bears' 2022 season came to an end on Friday morning, following a 4-2 loss to the No. 3 seed and defending champion South Carolina State in the semifinal of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championships at Cary Tennis Park.
Morgan State, the No. 2 seed, ends the season 9-11-1 overall, while South Carolina State improved to 8-9 and advanced to Saturday's championship final against top-seeded Howard.
Doubles (1,3,2)
The Bulldogs would jump out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Morgan State got started with their No. 1 team of
Asmara Rose and
Averiana Mitchell defeated S.C. State's Rachida Berjane and Ikram Rassif, 6-2.
However, the Bulldogs would respond by winning the next two doubles contests to earn the point. Teogora Vujicic and Anabel Aguilar defeated Morgan's
Stefania Moysiadi and
Nolwenn Cardoso at No. 3, 6-3 and Lasya Patnaik and Nalanda Silva teamed up to defeat
Hannah Smith and
Anabel Aran 6-4 in a No. 2 doubles contest.
Singles (4,1,6,5,3)
Morgan State evened the score at 1-1 when
Nolwenn Cardoso defeated Begum Gumussoy 6-1, 6-0 in a No. 4 singles match.
S.C. State reclaimed the lead when Patnaik earned a No. 1 singles victory over
Ana-Lei Kalawe 6-2, 6-3. Morgan State bounced back with a win at No. 6, when Rose defeated Aguilar 6-2, 7-5 to tie the match at 2-2.
That would be the last victory for the Lady Bears, as the defending champion Bulldogs would close out the match winning the next two contests.
The next contest to finish came at the No. 5 spot, where Rassif held off Aran 6-3, 6-4 to put S.C. State up 3-2. The Bulldogs then closed out the match at No. 3, when Silva got past Mitchell 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to earn the victory.
