Bears Shutout Betway Rival Howard, 4-0; Advance to MEAC Finals

Updated Bracket

NORFOLK, Va. (April 29, 2022)
— The Morgan State men's tennis team began the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championships with a dominant 4-0 performance over Beltway rival No. 3 seed Howard on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.

With the win, the second-seeded Bears advanced to face defending champion and No. 1 seed, South Carolina State in the championship on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The last time the two teams met in the MEAC Championships, was April 27, 2019 in Norfolk, Va. The men's team captured their first MEAC Championship in program history with a 4-2 win over defending champion South Carolina State.

Thursday's semifinal victory was Morgan State's first match back in the MEAC Tennis Championships since winning the title in 2019. In 2020, the season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the MEAC championships to be canceled. Last season the Morgan State men's program opted out of playing the 2021 campaign.

Doubles (1,3)
The Bears got going by claiming the doubles point over Howard to take a 1-0.

Mikeal Carpenter and Nihit Rawal were paired at No. 1 and captured the first doubles victory of the match with a 6-0 defeat of the Bison' team of Justin Cadeau and Daniel Dunac.

Morgan State then wrapped up the point when Sebastian Lopez and Makkijha Brown earned a No. 3 doubles victory over Gabe Knowles and Kyle Martin, 6-0.

Singles (1,3,5)
The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 when Mikeal Carpenter defeated fellow First Team All-MEAC honoree Justin Cadeua, 6-1, 6-1 at a No. 1 singles match.

Nihit Rawal followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 over Marcel Dawson to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Sebastian Lopez secured the win for Morgan State with his No. 3 win over Hassimiyou Dieng 6-1, 6-2.

The men's championship match will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and it will be streamed live on HBCUGO; visit hbcugo.tv for more information and to download the free HBCUGO app on Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.
