Bears Come Up Big In Crosstown Rivalry, Win Fourth Straight Game

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 3, 2022) – The Morgan State men's basketball team won their fourth straight game with a 63-59 win over Coppin State in the road leg of their rivalry on Thursday night at PEC Arena. 
 
With the win, Morgan State improves to 12-13 overall and finish the regular season at 7-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.  Morgan claims the No. 4 seed for the 2022 MEAC Basketball Tournament.
 
Isaiah Burke led the Bears off the bench with a season-high 14 points on 6 for 6 shooting and had two rebounds and a steal. Sherwyn Devonish finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Malik Miller and Lagio Grantsaan chipped in eight points each for the Bears who made key plays as a team down the stretch.
 
Both teams had a tough night from the field with the Bears shooting at a 36.4% clip and 30.8% from three while Coppin went 33.9% from the field and 24% from three. Rebounds were almost dead even with Morgan holding a four rebound advantage at 48-44. Both teams struggled in turnover department with each team giving the ball up 20 times apiece. 

Nendah Tarke paced the Eagles (7-22, 6-8) with a game-high 18 points (7-22 FG), 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals in 39 minutes. Justin Steers finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Mike Hood and Alex Rojas each had 10 points.

Both teams struggled on offense throughout most of the first half. 
 
Morgan eventually held an 17-12 lead (5:20) after a step-back triple by Trevor Moore
 
Keith McGee hit a three-pointer and Lagio Grantsaan scored on a short hook inside the paint to open up a 24-16 lead.
 
Justin Steers kept the Eagles close and finished the half with a 3-point play and scored on an inbounds play with 2.5 seconds remaining to trim the Bears lead to 24-22 at halftime.
 
Alex Rojas hit his third triple of the game as part of a 10-2 run to give the Eagles a 32-26 edge for the first four minutes of the second half.  Tarke hit a floater over Chad Venning to give the Eagles its largest lead at 37-30.
 
Miller scored on a putback and Burke converted a 3-point play as part of an 11-4 run to help the Bears reclaim the lead at 41-40 with 10:22 remaining. Steers scored on a dunk on the ensuing possession and and Sperlock connected on a 3-point play to retake the lead at 45-41.
 
The Bears broke the game open sparked by Burke who scored four points during a 16-2 run. A tip-in by Devonish gave Morgan a 58-48 advantage with 4:05 left to go. 
 
Tarke then scored nine of the next 11 points himself, giving Coppin a 59-58 lead with just under a minute remaining but Morgan closed the game with five-straight points to win.
