Miller Leads Bears Past Hartford

Malik Miller scored a season-high 28 points with nine rebounds and six steals.

The short story: Senior guard Malik Miller scored a game-high 28 points with nine rebounds and six steals as Morgan State defeated Hartford, 61-54, in non-conference action Thursday night at Chase Arena. It marked the Bears first road victory of the season.
 
OPENING TIP
  • Miller connected on 10-of-21 from the floor and scored 17 of his season-high 28 points in the second half.
  • Senior forward Khalil Turner finished with 13 points (5-11 FG) and added 10 rebounds and a block in 24 minutes. 
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke, who entered the game averaging 17.8 ppg, added 10 points with four assists and three steals in 34 minutes.
  • Pano Pavlidis scored 14 points with eight boards, three assists and three blocked shots to lead the Hawks. Kurtis Henderson had 12 points (7 turnovers) and Jared Kimbrough  added 11 points (5-6 FTs) with six boards and four blocks.
     
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Bears outscored the Hawks 15-2 thru the first 7 minutes of action.
  • Hartford closed the gap behind an 6-0 spurt and a jump hook in the paint by Kimbrough cut the Bears lead to 15-8.
  • Burke hit a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 21-15 lead, but it turned out to be Morgan's last field goal of the half. Hartford ended up leveling the score behind a 7-0 run and went into the intermission tied at 22-22. 
  • Hartford, a Division III member, joined the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), turned over Morgan 16 times in the first half and scored 18 points off those miscues.
  • Hartford took its first lead on the opening basket of the second half behind a Pano Pavlidis layup (24-22).
  • The Hawks held a 35-34 lead before Miller scored the next five points for the Bears to take a 39-35 advantage …Turner grabbed a steal and raced in for an and-1 to help push the lead to 44-37 with 11:35 remaining -- part of a 12-2 run by the Bears.
  • Hartford kept the game within reach behind .789 (15-19) free throw shooting for the night.
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Hawks by a 38-30 margin.
  • Morgan shot .396 (21-of-53) from the field, compared to Hartford's .375 (18-of-48). The Hawks struggled from deep where they shot just  .176 (3-17) from beyond the arc, while the Bears connected on 4-of-15 (.396) from 3-point range.
  • Both teams combined for 44 turnovers – MSU 22, Hartford 22.
  • Morgan scored 32 points inside the paint.
 
NOTABLE
  • Thursday night's game marked the first road win since defeating cross-town rival Coppin State (63-59) on March 3, 2022.
  • The Bears limited the Hawks to just 1-for-10 shooting from 3 in the first half.
  • Lewis Djonkam picked up his 5th foul with 4:26 remaining in 2nd half.
