Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Dec. 18, 2022)-The Morgan State women's basketball team went into the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday afternoon for the first time since a 13-point loss to the Cavaliers in the first round of the 2011 WNIT.
 
Unfortunately, the Lady Bears were unable to make it a competitive game after the first quarter, as the host Cavaliers handed Morgan State an 84-28 loss to close out their non-conference schedule with a 12-0 record.
 
Mir McLean led three Cavalier players in double figures scoring, finishing with a game-high 16 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Camryn Taylor finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots, while Sam Brunelle added 13 points, as all 11 Virginia players scored in the game.
 
Morgan State (7-4), which shot 16.6 percent (11-for-66) for the game was 0-19 from three-point range, scored on its first shot, then missed its next 12 attempts over a seven-minute scoreless drought.
 
The Lady Bears would trail 14-10 after a quarter of play, but the host Cavaliers outscored Morgan, 19-4 in the second quarter to take a 33-14 lead at the break. Virginia then proceeded to put together a 30-8 third quarter, as the hosts outscored the Lady Bears a combined 51-14 in the second half.
 
Sunshine McCrae led the Lady Bears with 12 points and tied a team-high with six rebounds. McCrae also led the team with two assists and had a steal. Ja'Niah Henson totaled 10 points and a game-high four steals.
 
The Cavaliers held a 51-30 rebounding advantage over the guests. Virginia also connected on 20-of-28 (71.4 percent) from the charity line, while Morgan State went 6-for-8 (75 percent) at the line.
 
The Lady Bears will travel to Manhattan, Kansas to take on Kansas State on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 12 p.m. ET at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats (10-2) is coming off 69-57 win over Northern Colorado on Sunday. The win extended K-State's non-conference home court winning streak to 18 straight.
