Texas State Holds Off Morgan State, 58-50

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Dec. 11, 2022)--Charlene Shepherd, playing back in her home State of Texas, recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Bears fell on the road to Texas State, 58-50 in a non-conference game at Strahan Arena on Sunday afternoon. It was the second consecutive double-double for Shepherd and her third this season.

Sunshine McCrae added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bears in the loss. Morgan State, which was playing its first game in 11 days after having two games canceled due to health and safety protocols, dropped to 7-3 on the season.

Texas State improved to 6-2 on the season and evened up the all-time series with Morgan State at 1-1.

The host Bobcats outscored Morgan State, 32-14 in the paint and held an 18-4 advantage in fast break points.

The Lady Bears used a 14-3 run over a span of four minutes and 23 seconds to take a 28-21 lead in the second quarter capped off by a jumper by Shepherd. Morgan State carried a 28-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Texas State held a 44-37 lead after a layup by Chelsea Johnson in the fourth quarter with 9:41 left in the game. Morgan State would go on an 11-4 spurt, capped off by two free throws from Ja'Niah Henson at the 3:02 mark to even the score at 48-48.

However, that's as close as the Lady Bears would get, as the Bobcats closed out the game on a 10-2 run, including scoring the final six points of the contest all at the free throw line to secure the win.

The Bobcats were led by Tianna Eaton, who finished with 15 points. Lauryn Thompson recorded a double-double with 12 points and tied a game-high 11 rebounds. Ja'Kayla Bowie tallied game highs in steals (4) and assists (4) to go with eight points and five rebounds.

Morgan State will be off until next Sunday, Dec. 18 when it travels to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the undefeated Cavaliers of the University of Virginia (11-0). Tip-off is at 2 p.m. inside John Paul Jones Arena.
