Bears Run Past Dragons

The short story: Senior guard Malik Miller scored a game-high 26 points with six rebounds as Morgan State reached the century mark for the second time this season, defeating Virginia-Lynchburg, 123-59, in non-conference action Tuesday night at Hill Field House.
 
OPENING TIP
  • Miller connected on 9-of-11 from the floor and scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half.
  • Senior forward Khalil Turner finished with a season-high 21 points (10-12 FG) and added six rebounds, six assists and four steals. 
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke added 20 points with six assists and three boards in 25 minutes.
  • Toto Fagbenle came off the bench and chipped in 14 points with a game-high six steals and four boards.  
  • Marcus Willis scored 25 points with three boards and three assists to lead the Dragons. Christian Goode (8 rebs, 4 asts) and Reed Pendleton (5 rebs) added 10 points apiece.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Morgan turned over VUL 27 times and scored 37 points off those miscues.
  • Morgan raced out to a 62-39 halftime lead against an overmatched Dragons team that plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). 
  • The ballgame was tied at 12-12 before the Khalil Turner scored on a layup to help ignite a 30-5 run over the course of the next seven minutes.  Turner collected a steal and finished with a fast break dunk to extend the Bears' lead to 42-17 with nine minutes left in the half.
  • The Bears opened the second half with a 12-3 run to give the Bears a 75-42 lead. 
  • Morgan hit the century mark on the scoreboard when Toto Fagbenle hit a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 100-53 lead with nine minutes remaining.  
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Dragons by a 47-30 margin.
  • Morgan shot .622 (51-of-82) from the field, compared to VUL's .344 (21-of-61). VUL shot .316 (6-19) from beyond the arc, while the Bears connected on 6-of-17 (.353) from 3-point range.
  • The Bears held a commanding 22-4 advantage in second chance points.  
  • Morgan scored 76 points inside the paint.

  • Tuesday night's game marked the first meeting between the teams in basketball action 
  • Malik Miller eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career early in the second half … he currently has 1,019 points. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bears will return to action when they travel to Ohio for a non-conference matchup against the Bowling Green Falcons. Tip-off at the Stroh Center is set for Saturday, December 3rd  at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
