Loyola Marymount Rallies for Overtime Win Against Morgan

Senior guard Isaiah Burke paced the Bears with a career-high 30 points.

The short story: Morgan State senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a career-high 30 points but Loyola Marymount rallied to drop the Bears 81-80 in overtime Wednesday afternoon at the Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.

OPENING TIP

  • Senior forward Keli Leaupepe led the Lions with a career-high 29 points and shot 6-for-11 from the field and converted 15-for-18 from the free throw line … he also had a game-high 11 rebounds. 
  • Senior guard Cam Shelton finished with a career-high 26 points (10-17 FG) with five boards, four assists and three steals. Junior guard Jalin Anderson also scored double figures with 11 points.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke led the Bears with 18 of his career-high 30 points (12-17 FG) in 45 minutes of action in the first half. 
  • Senior Malik Miller recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 40 minutes. Junior Khalil Turner finished with 14 points and three rebounds and three steals.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • LMU turned over Morgan 21 times and scored 23 points off those miscues.
  • Morgan outplayed and out hustled the Lions in the opening 20 minutes and held a 46-38 halftime lead behind Burke's 18-point (4-6 3FG) explosion. 
  • The Bears used a 12-2 run behind four consecutive 3-pointers with the last one buried by Burke to give Morgan an 11-point edge at the 2:50 mark for their largest lead of the half (44-33). 
  • Cam Shelton scored on a goaltending call on Khalil Turner to cut the lead to 71-70 with 2:12 remaining in regulation. On the ensuing play, Rob Lawson was whistled for an offensive foul (1:50) and the Lions took the lead at 71-70 on a bankshot in the lane by Shelton … it was LMU's first lead since the 11:20 mark on the first half when they held a 17-15 advantage.
  • Burke split a pair of free throws to tie the game (71-71) with 1:13 to go, stopping a 7-0 run by the Lions.
  • Shelton scored in the paint to put the Lions in from 74-72 with 57 seconds remaining.
  • LMU called their final timeout with 29 second left to go, but had the ensuing inbounds pass stolen by Khalil Turner who raced down the floor for a dunk to tie the game at 74-74. In the final seconds, Malik Miller stole the ball from Shelton at mid court and launched a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer that banged off the glass no good. The teams headed into overtime.
  • Burke opened the overtime with a 3-point play to go up 77-74…Miller split a pair from the stripe to go up 78-74.
  • Leaupepe scored two baskets to ties the game at 78-78. Cam Shelton scored inside to give LMU a 81-79 lead with 59 seconds left.
  • Khalil Turner missed a contested corner three-pointer as time expired.
  • The Lions opened the second half by outscoring the Bears 6-0 … Lewis Djonkam picked up his 4th foul with 17:37 and the Bears leading 46-43.
  • Both teams struggled from the free throw line - LMU shot .677 (21-31), while the Bears were 14-for-21 (.667).
  • The Lions were in the bonus at the 12:33 mark with MSU leading 58-51.
  • Burke hit a difficult shot in the paint to give the Bears a 61-50 lead with 11:56 left in the game.
  • MSU shot .483 (29-of-60) from the field, compared to LMU's .456 (26-of-57). That advantage carried over to beyond the arc, where the Bears outshot the Lions .500 (8-of-16) to .364 (8-of-22) from 3-point range.
  • MSU led for 33:09 out of the 45 minutes, while LMU only led for 6:11.

NOTABLE

  • Wednesday night's game marked the sixth meeting between the teams … the series is tied 3-3.
  • Isaiah Burke's 30-point performance was the most points scored by a Bear player since De'Torrion Ware had a 36-point outing against Delaware State on Jan. 24, 2021.
  • The Bears are 1-1 in overtime contests so far this 2022-23 season … Morgan defeated Utah Valley 73-72 in overtime in the first round of the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic.
  • After taking a 37-25 lead into the break, the Royals would continue to extend their lead as the Bears never came within eight points of the lead for the remainder of the game.
