Bears suffer 35-6 loss to Howard, Bison capture a share of the MEAC Title

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 19, 2022) -- Quinton Williams accounted for three touchdowns to lead Howard to a 35-6 win against Morgan State on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Hughes Stadium.

The loss ended a two-game conference streak for the Bears (4-7, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), while the win secures Howard (5-6, 4-1) as MEAC co-champions with North Carolina Central, who handed the Bison their only conference loss.

Williams completed 17 of 24 passes for 241 yards, including touchdown passes of 13 and 15 yards. He was also on the receiving end of a 4-yard touchdown pass from running back Jarrett Hunter to increase the lead to 28-0 early in the fourth quarter.

The Bears' offense sputtered for most of the game. Morgan quarterbacks combined for just 67 passing yards. Sophomore Duce Taylor completed 4 of 12 passes for 32 yards and was sacked twice. Sophomore R.J. Walker entered the game in the second half and threw for 35 yards on 4 of 13 completions.

Morgan managed 201 total yards of offense, while the Bison totaled 369 yards.

Senior Alfonzo Graham, the conference's leading rusher, had 25 carries for a game-high  111 yards.

Defensively, Morgan was led by sophomore defensive lineman Elijah Williams who finished with seven tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack. Senior Devan Hebron added seven stops with three tackles for loss and a sack.

Morgan kept it tight until midway through the first quarter when Williams connected on a 13-yard pass to Nah'sh Hezekiah as part of a 3-play, 65-yard drive.

Howard returned to the scoreboard when Ian Wheeler ran for a 9-yard touchdown at the 6:46 mark of the second quarter. The Bears went into the halftime trailing 14-0.

The Bison continued to pour it on in the second half as they outscored the Bears 21-0. Williams tosses a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Brown for the only points of the third quarter. Hunter found Williams open in the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown with 14:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Williams then took a QB-keeper for a 15-yard run for the Bison's final score of the day.

Morgan avoided being shutout by Howard for the second consecutive season when R.J. Walker scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds remaining. The point after attempt by sophomore Beckett Leary was missed.
