Lady Bears Pull Away From Notre Dame Of Maryland, 90-55

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 14, 2022)—Morgan State freshman Jael Butler scored a game-high 20 points to lead four Lady Bear players in double figures scoring on Monday evening, as Morgan State defeated local foe, Notre Dame of Maryland, 90-55 in non-conference action at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State improved to 3-0 on the season, while also picking up its 29th victory on its home floor in the last 32 appearances dating back to the 2018-19 season. It was an exhibition game for the visiting Gators (1-1) and will not count towards their record.
 
Butler shot 9-of-12 and knocked down both free throw attempts. She also added an assist and a steal.
 
Charlene Shepherd came off the bench to total 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to earn a double-double. Maiya Bumbray added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range and Ja'Niah Henson contributed 10 points.
 
The Lady Bears held a 38-28 advantage at the intermission and closed out the game outscoring the Gators 33-16 in the fourth period.
 
Morgan State shot 44 percent (38-of-86) from the floor and was 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from three-point range. The hosts out rebounded the Gators, 52-26 and tallied 23 assists to just seven for the Notre Dame of Maryland. Shepherd finished with a game-high five assists and Taylor Addison (nine points, seven rebounds) added four.
 
Defensively, the Lady Bears forced 25 turnovers out of Notre Dame of Maryland. Morgan State had 18 steals in the game with Addison leading the way with a game-high five steals. Shepherd recorded four steals and Shianne Johnson added three.
 
The Gators were led by Kori People, who scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting, had a team-high two steals and grabbed six rebounds to tie for team-high honors. Alexis Durham scored 14 points and Ayana Brim added 10 on 3-of-4 shooting and six rebounds.  
 
Notre Dame of Maryland concluded the game shooting connecting on 19-of-44 (43 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-15 (33 percent) from three-point distance. The Gators were 12-of-17 (70 percent) from the line, while Morgan State went to the line just eight times, connecting on six free throws for 75 percent.
 
Morgan State will continue its six-game homestand to begin the season when it welcomes the Shock of Washington Adventist to Hill Field House for Girls Night Out on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
