Morgan rolls past Delaware State, 37-7

DOVER, Del. (Nov. 12, 2022) – Morgan State did something today that has not happened since Nov. 8, 2018.

The Bears recorded a road victory.

Morgan scored 31 unanswered points and the Bears defense dominated the Hornets in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

The Bears absolutely had their way today as they held Delaware State to 81 total yards, recorded eight sacks, and scored a pair of defensive touchdowns to cruise to a 37-7 victory.

With the win the Bears improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Seeking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 24-22 loss at Stony Brook one week earlier, Morgan quarterback Duce Taylor connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Owumi in the back of the endzone to take a 16-7 lead into halftime.

Taylor went 9 for 17 for 137 yards. For the game, the Bears amassed 224 yards on 54 plays.

2018

Freshman sensation Keith Jenkins Jr., who entered the game ranked No. 11 in the FCS in kickoff returns, picked his way through the Hornets and dashed down the right sideline to open the second half with a 90-yard kickoff return to give the Bears a 23-7 cushion.

Morgan opened the scoring when DSU's Matt Noll had his punt blocked by Hosea Robinson who also scooped the ball off the turf and returned it for a 26-yard touchdown. The point after attempt by Beckett Leary was no good. The Bears led 6-0 with 11:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets eventually got on the scoreboard when quarterback C.J. Henry completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bizzett Woodley to take a 7-6 lead with 12:16 left in the second quarter.

Henry completed 15 of 18 passes for 67 yards and was sacked seven times for the day.

Henry was blindside-sacked for a fumble by Jae'Veyon Morton, giving the Bears the ball at their own 45. Leary capped a 9-play, 38-yard drive with a 23-yard field goal to retake the lead at 9-7 with 2:31 left before the half.

DSU (5-5, 2-3) turned the ball over on the ensuing drive when Jordan Toles hit wideout Rakkeem Smith who coughed up the ball and Merinio Dendoe recovered the fumble at the DSU 38. The turnover led to the Bears adding another score just before halftime.

Carlvainsky Decius intercepted a pass by Henry and returned it 36-yards for a touchdown – it was the only scoring in the third quarter. The added another score in the fourth quarter when a botched snap was recovered in the endzone by Devon Hebron for a touchdown with 13:48 left in the contest.

Linebacker Erick Hunter had a game-high 11 tackles with four tackles for loss and two sacks for the Bears. Lawrence Richardson added 10 tackles  and Elijah Williams had nine tackles and two sacks.

Alfonzo Graham, the league's leading running back, finished with 69 yards on 20 carries and eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Late in the fourth quarter, Graham had an 80-yard TD run down the sideline called back due to a holding penalty on the play.
