BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 10, 2022)—Ja'Niah Henson scored a game-high 22 points and Charlene Shepherd added 19 to lead Morgan State to a 59-50 non-conference victory over local foe Loyola Maryland on Thursday evening at Hill Field House.
With the win, Morgan State improved to 2-0 for the first time since the shortened 2020-21 season, while extending its all-time series lead over the Greyhounds to 14-2. The victory also gave the Lady Bears their eight consecutive win at home and the 28
th victory in their last 31 appearances at Hill Field House dating back to the 2018-19 season.
Henson shot 8-of-15 from the floor, including knocking down four three-pointers, while adding four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shepherd was a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity line, pulled down six boards and had three steals. Morgan State shot 87 percent (13-of-16) from the free-throw line.
Morgan State, which trailed 25-19 at the intermission and 45-38 heading into the fourth quarter, outscored the Greyhounds 21-5 in the final quarter to secure the comeback victory.
The Greyhounds took a 49-40 lead on a jumper by Lex Therien with 6:26 remaining in the contest. Morgan State would respond by closing out the game on a 19-1 run. Emily Jones triggered the Lady Bears' run by connecting on a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 49-43, as the hosts would score 17 straight points to regain control.
Loyola Maryland (0-2) was led by Therien, who shot 10-of-15 to finish with 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season in as many games. Koi Sims grabbed a game-high 15 boards and Taleah Dixon totaled 13 points in the loss.
Morgan State recorded 14 steals in the game and forced Loyola Maryland into 27 turnovers.
The Lady Bears will continue their six-game homestand to start the season when it welcomes its third opponent to Hill Field House in Notre Dame of Maryland on Monday, Nov. 14 for Women's Appreciation Day. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
