Richard Throws 4 TDs as N.C. Central Tops Morgan

DURHAM, N.C. (Oct. 13, 2022) – On a clear crisp Thursday night in Durham the Bears struggled to get into any sort of offensive rhythm.

Meanwhile, it was the exact opposite for the Eagles who were playing in their first conference matchup of the season.

Davius Richard threw for 217 yards and accounted for a career-best six touchdowns (4 passing) and Latrel Collier ran for 112 yards and a score as North Carolina Central followed its bye week with a resounding 59-20 victory over visiting Morgan State in a nationally televised contest inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. It marked the Eagles' sixth straight win against Morgan since 2015.

Morgan (2-4, 0-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) struggled to slow down NCCU (5-1, 1-0) all night, as the Eagles scored touchdowns on their first four drives.

Richard tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Hicks, followed by a 7-yard TD pass to Devin Smith to get the Eagles off to a 14-0 lead with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter.

Carson Baker connected with Andre Crawley for a 33-yard TD. The extra point by Becket Leary trimmed NCCU's lead to 14-7 to end the first quarter scoring.

Richard scored on a pair of touchdown runs to open the second quarter. He scored on an 11-yard TD run, followed by a 4th & 1 run in which he was bottled up in the backfield before breaking free for a 42-yard score.

The Bears scored on the ensuing kickoff, when Keith Jenkins answered with a sensational 96-yard kickoff return. The extra point was missed and Morgan trailed 28-13.

Jenkins had a spectacular night for the Bears on special teams. The freshman racked up 215 yards (43.0 avg) on five kick returns.

NCCU would go on the put the game in cruise control as Collier punched it in for a 6-yard TD and Richard threw a 3-yard TD pass to Devin Smith to extend the Eagles lead to 42-13 at halftime.

Richard completed 17 of 24 passes and added 66 yards on 9 carries, including a pair of TDs. E.J. Hicks led the Eagles with five receptions for 83 yards.

The Eagles offense racked up 530 yards and held a 27-to-13 advantage in first downs.

Baker completed 11 of 21 passes for 125 yards for Morgan, which managed only 259 yards of offense. Duce Taylor added 46 yards and scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Senior Alfonzo Graham, who entered as the league's leading rusher, was held to 41 yards (2.9 avg.) on 14 carries. Crawley led all receivers with six catches for 87 yards.

Jordan Toles led the Bears defense with 11 tackles, while Elijah Williams had nine tackles and four tackles for loss and two sacks. Lawrence Richardson and Xavier Shell added six stops apiece.

Morgan will try and right the ship when they step out of conference play to take on the Delaware Blue Hens in Newark, Delaware.
