Bears Drop Monday Night Tilt at Maryland Eastern Shore

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 31, 2022) – Donchevell Nugent  scored a game-high 23 points on 6 of 11 shooting to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to a 79-72 victory over Morgan State on Monday night at Hytche Arena. The Bears drop to 7-11 on the season and fall to 2-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Nathaniel Pollard finished with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds with three blocked shots for the Hawks (7-9, 2-3 MEAC).  Dom London added 13 points and Mike Mensah had nine points.

Chad Venning led Morgan with 15 points as a reserve, while Sherwyn Devonish and Keith McGee had 13 points apiece. De'Torrion Ware chipped in nine points with eight rebounds.

The Bears entered tonight's contest trying to get back-to-back wins on back-to-back days having defeated Delaware State on Sunday in Baltimore. However, tonight they seemed to be sluggish from the tip-off.

Both teams struggled to hit baskets during the early going. The Bears started the night 1 for 7, while the Hawks were 1 for 10.

Nugent hit his second 3-pointer of the night along with a pair of free throws to help build a 23-13 lead.

Keith McGee scored on a dunk to stop a 4-minute scoring drought. Eastern Shore responded when London scored a basket and hit a 3-pointer as part of a 16-4 run to take a 28-15 advantage (4:59).

Morgan was unable to establish an offensive rhythm and was limited to 9 pf 26 shooting as they went into the halftime trailing 35-22. The Hawks did not light it up from the field either (11-29 FG), however they were able to knock down 6 of 15 3-pointers.

The Hawks led 42-24 following a tip-in and fastbreak layup by Pollard to open the second half.

The Bears turned up their defensive effort and forced turnovers that seemed to get their offense in gear.

McGee scored five points to help ignite a 14-2 run to get back in the ballgame. Chad Venning scored on a dunk and De'Torrion Ware added a putback to help trim the Hawks lead to 45-42 with 12:41 remaining.

Pollard scored on a putback to snap a 3-minute drought.  The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes before a Zion Styles putback dunk pushed the Hawks' lead back to double-figures at 61-51. Nugent hit a 3-pointer for his 20th point of the night to extend the lead to 65-53 with 7:13 left to go.

Malik Miller scored inside the paint and McGee knocked in a pair of free throws to chip into the lead. The Bears trailed 70-64 with 3:30 remaining.

Miller scored on a layup to cut the lead to 72-66 with under 3 minutes remaining, but the Hawks were able to salt the game away from the free throw line.

Eastern Shore shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field in the victory while connecting on 10-of-25 (40.0 percent) from three-point range.  Morgan held a 42-to-35 edge on the boards, but finished with 25 turnovers. Morgan shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) and was held to 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) on three-point attempts.
