NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Sept. 17, 2021)-The Morgan State volleyball team earned a split on the opening day of the UNH/Merrimack Tournament on Friday at Bert Hammel Court on the campus of Merrimack College. The Lady Bears defeated host Merrimack 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-15) in the opener, before falling to co-host New Hampshire 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-20).

Morgan State improved to 2-11 on the season, while Merrimack fell to 0-13 and New Hampshire improved to 7-5 overall.

The Lady Bears will conclude the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Durham, N.H. to take on Rhode Island at 11 a.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.

Morgan State 3, Merrimack 0

Madison Grace totaled a match-high 10 kills and Garbriela Hiciano added nine.
Jasmin Perry finished with seven kills, while hitting for a match- and career-tying .667 hitting percentage.
Mackenzie Jefferson had a match-high 26 assists and
Jadore Hayes collected a match-best eight digs.
Alyssa Sampson tallied four of Morgan State's seven service aces.

Morgan State recorded 41 kills and hit .301 as a team to earn first first sweep of the season. The Lady Bears recorded a set-best 15 kills twice in Sets 2 and 3, while hitting for a team-best .421 attack percentage. The host Warriors totaled 19 kills for the match and has held to .091 hitting percentage.

Morgan State also held an advantage in digs (27-17), assists (35-18) and blocks (4-2).

The host Warriors were led by Sydney Green, who finished with five kills, while Megan Larson had a team-leading five digs. Megan Rumenapp finished with 14 assists and Brooke Leestma had three service aces.

Morgan State 0, New Hampshire 3

Gabriela Hiciano totaled a match-high 10 kills and hit .421, while
Jasmin Perry (.353 hitting) and
Madison Grace each had seven kills in the loss to New Hampshire.
Mackenzie Jefferson finished with a match-high 23 assists and a team-leading six digs. Perry recorded a match-high four blocks, all solos to help Morgan State to a 7.0-5.0 blocking advantage over the Wildcats.

New Hampshire was led by Erin Hedrick, who finished with seven kills. Wren Macaulay fell shy of a double-double with 20 assists and a team-leading nine digs.

Set 1
The Wildcats broke a 15-15 tie with a 5-2 spurt to take a 20-17 lead. Morgan State evened the score at 20 all, following back-to-back attack errors by UNH. The Wildcats extended their lead to three (23-20) and went on to win 25-22. Morgan State totaled a match-high 13 kills and hit for a season-best .333 in the opening set. UNH finished with 11 kills and hit .130 for the set.

Set 2
UNH used a 12-6 spurt to take a 17-11 lead, capped off by an attack error by Morgan State. Morgan State got within five points (19-14) on a service ace from Jefferson, but would get no closer. The Wildcats would score six of the final 10 points scored to secure the 25-18 victory. The Lady Bears totaled 12 kills, but committed six errors for a hitting percentage of .194. UNH finished the set with 11 kills and had an attack percentage of .391.

Set 3
Morgan State trailed 20-12, before using an 8-4 run to pull within 24-20 after a bad set was charged to UNH. The Wildcats would seal the deal with a kill from Shea Purcell for the 25-21 win. New Hampshire would hold the Lady Bears to a hitting percentage of .031 after recording nine kills with eight errors. The Wildcats would finish with eight kills for a .125 hitting percentage.
