Carter, Delaware State drop Bears in MEAC regular season finale, 82-75

Lagio Grantsaan led the Bears with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

DOVER, Del. (March 6, 2021) — Delaware State entered tonight's game still looking for its first conference win and tried to spoil Morgan's day. Unfortunately for the Bears, they accomplished both.

Senior Myles Carter scored a game-high 24 points and John Stansbury had 16 points as the Hornets beat Morgan State 82-75 on Saturday.

The win avenged a 92-67 loss to the Bears on Friday night and ended their chances of closing the season with a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division regular season title.

As a result of the loss, Coppin State and Norfolk State will share the title. Coppin will also enter next week's MEAC Tournament as the North No. 1 seed. Morgan will be the North No. 3 seed and will face South No. 2 seed Florida A&M on Thursday.

The Hornet's (3-16, 1-11 MEAC) season-long offensive struggles seemed to disappear in the second half of tonight's game. DSU shot just 14-23 (38.9 percent) from the field in the first half, but shot 56 percent in the second half and connected on six of their three-point attempts.

Morgan shot 40 percent from the floor and went 9-for-20 from 3-point territory, but was outhustled on the glass by a 41-30 margin.

Dominik Fragala added 12 points for the Hornets and Ameer Bennett chipped in 10.

Lagio Grantsaan led Morgan with 21 points and nine rebounds. Troy Baxter added 19 points, four rebounds and four blocks, while De'Torrion Ware had 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Sherwyn Devonish had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Bears fell behind 7-2 during the early going. The Hornets had a much better effort to start the game on the offensive boards.

Morgan took its first lead of the game when Ware hit two free throws to give the Bears a 17-15 edge with 9:34 remaining.

The Bears went on a 10-2 run during a stretch in which a technical was assessed to DSU's Zack Kent for arguing an official's call. The Bears led 30-23 (6:31).

Grantsaan scored 12 of the Bears' 36 points in the first half, but Carter sank a three and Bennett scored on a dunk help the Hornets head to the break trailing 36-32.

Morgan was able to keep a cushion for much of the second half between them and the Hornets, due to a bunch of second-chance opportunities created by seven offensive rebounds. However, Delaware responded time and time again with big shots from Carter and Stansbury.

The Hornets were down 57-50 with 11:44 remaining before they started getting into the paint and drawing fouls.

DSU outscored the Bears 15-7, highlighted by Fragala making a three followed by a putback layup by Bennett to give them a 65-64 advantage with 6:40 remaining.

The Bears used a 7-2 spurt to retake the lead and Grantsaan's layup with 4:24 gave his team a 71-67 edge.

The Hornets retook the lead when Carter finished with a layup to pull ahead 74-73.

Morgan's Trevor Moore was whistled for a travel call while battling on the offensive boards with just over 1 minute left to go. On the ensuing possession, Carter buried a straightaway deep 3-pointer toward the end of the shot clock to put the Hornets ahead 77-73 with 38 seconds left.

DSU connected on 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

Next Up:
The Bears first game in the MEAC Tournament will be Thursday (March 11) against South No. 2 seed Florida A&M.

Bear Notes:
The Bears finished the year 7-2 (.778) on the road, the best winning percentage on the road among MEAC teams.
