Volleyball Ends Season With Shutout Loss At Rival Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 28, 2021)-Morgan State concluded the 2021 volleyball season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-20) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division loss to rival Coppin State in the season finale on Sunday evening for the Eagles' Senior Night at the Physical Education Complex Arena.
 
Morgan State (4-8, 3-7 MEAC) ended the season dropping its season-long fourth consecutive match. Meanwhile, Coppin State (10-4, 9-1 MEAC), the 2021 Spring MEAC Northern Division champions, extended its winning streak to nine straight to end the regular season.
 
The 80th all-time meeting between the two programs was extra special for Coppin, as it marked the first time ever, that the Eagles have swept Morgan State in a match in three sets. Despite losing all three meetings this season, Morgan State still holds a commanding 65-15 all-time series lead over the Eagles.
 
Offensively, Morgan State was led by Gabriela Hiciano, who finished with 10 kills and added five digs and a block. Mykaela Ross, who hit for a match-high .500, finished with six kills on 12 attempts and no errors.
 
Defensively, Alyssa Sampson totaled a match- and season-high 18 digs, while Tylar Roberson finished with 14 digs. Jada Bivins fell short of a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs. Jasmin Perry assisted on a match-high five blocks.  
 
The Eagles were led by Chudear Tut's match-high 14 kills. Tut also hit for a match-best .500 and combined on a team-leading four blocks. Ashley Roman had a team-high 17 digs, while Aislynn Weaver had 13 digs and Salma Gonzalez totaled 10.
 
Morgan State, which hit .052 for the match finished the match with 27 kills. Coppin recorded 45 kills and hit .265 for the match. The Lady Bears held a 7-5 advantage over the Eagles in blocks. Coppin State tallied 40 assists to 26 by the guests and held a 59-53 advantage over Morgan State in digs.
 
Coppin State will head into next week's MEAC Tournament (April 2-3), hosted by Norfolk State University, as the northern division's top seed.
 
Morgan State, who was the 2019 MEAC Tournament runner-up, after taking five-time defending champion Howard to five sets in the last conference tournament played, will now direct its focus towards the 2021 Fall season.
