Softball Sweeps Norfolk State On Day 1 Of MEAC Season Opening Series

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 13, 2021)-Morgan State opened up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Norfolk State on Saturday at Lois T. Murray Field. The Lady Bears claimed the opener by a score of 1-0, before defeating the Spartans 5-3 in Game 2.
 
The victory extended the Lady Bears' (3-1, 2-0 MEAC) winning streak to three straight. Norfolk State fell to 7-9 overall and 0-2 MEAC.
 
Game 1
The opener saw some solid defense and pitching by both teams. The Lady Bears finished with four hits in the game, while Norfolk State had two hits.
 
Morgan State broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Haylee Bobos singled up the middle to score Aliya Ewell for the game winner, giving the hosts the 1-0 victory.
 
Damishah Charles, Ellen Ebbers, Ewell and Bobos all went 1-for-3 at the plate. The Spartan's two hits came from Jade Dixon and Jazzmaine Hammond.
 
Stephanie Rundlett got the win for the Lady Bears and improved to 1-1 on the season. Rundlett recorded four strikeouts, while surrendering two hits and two walks in a complete game victory.
 
Norfolk State's Cam Andersen (4-2) also struck out four batters and gave up two walks and was charged with allowing a run on four hits in six innings of work.
 
Game 2
Morgan State junior pitcher Mikayla Barnard put on a pitching display to lead the Lady Bears a victory and improve to 2-0 on the young season.
 
The Ellicott City, Md. native tallied a game-high 11 strikeouts, while surrendering three runs on eight hits and two walks in the win.
 
The Lady Bears jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning. Sarah Tuzinski scored the first run of the game off a single by Ewell. Bobos later singled up the middle to drive in Charles and Ewell to give the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead.
 
Norfolk State got on the board with a run in the second when Denisha Megginson doubled to right field to score Brooke Bond and cut the Morgan State advantage to 3-1.
 
The hosts went back to work in the bottom half of the second, adding two runs to extend their cushion to 5-1. Tuzinski grounded out to second base to score Meikel Turner and Katariina Delph also scored on the play on a throwing error by the first baseman.
 
Norfolk State got a solo homer from Gabby Vaughan in the fourth inning to make it a 5-2 game. The Spartans would add their final run of the game when Yrral Davis singled up the middle to score Kerris Cameron for the third and final run.
 
The Spartans, who recorded eight hits in the game, were led by Davis, who went 2-for-2 with a RBI. Hammond was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Norfolk State's Alexis Robinson fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss. Robinson was tagged for five runs on seven hits and had a strikeout in two innings pitched. Relief pitchers Kirsten Green and Cameron each threw three strikeouts.
 
Charles went 2-for-2 with a run and a walk to lead Morgan State. Bobos was 1-for-3 with a game-high 2RBI, while Tuzinski and Ewell each went 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI.   
 
The Lady Bears and Norfolk State will conclude their weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon at Lois T. Murray Field.
