Softball Sweeps Another MEAC Doubleheader Series Against Norfolk State

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 14, 2021) -- Morgan State completed a four-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) season opening series sweep of Norfolk State, by claiming Sunday's doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field by identical 6-2 scores.
 
The wins extend the Lady Bears' winning streak to five straight, as Morgan State improved to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in the MEAC. Norfolk State fell to 7-11 on the season and 0-4 in the MEAC and has now dropped four straight.
 
Game 1
Morgan State scored six runs on four hits and had four walks in the Game 1 win. Haylee Bobos went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI, while Ellen Ebbers finished 1-for-2 with a run, walk and RBI. Cayla Sweazie was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
 
Stephanie Rundlett improved to 2-1 on the season after pitching four innings and surrendering two runs on three hits, three walks and notched a strikeout. Melissa Paz pitched the final three innings, scattering three hits, while throwing two strikeouts to earn the save.
 
Norfolk State starting pitcher Joana Holland through three strikeouts and was charged with two runs on a hit and two walks. The Spartans' Kirsten Greene received the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. Greene faced just one batter and surrendered the go ahead run, while walking a batter. Reserve pitcher Kennedy Cameron allowed three runs on three hits, a walk and struck out three in 2 and 2/3 innings.
 
Offensively, the Spartans had two runs on six hits. Tuli Iosefa finished 2-for-3, including a triple, had a walk and scored a run to lead the guests.
 
Norfolk State got on the board first with two runs in the fourth when Iosefa tripled to score Jade Dixon and later scored on a single hit by Gabby Vaughan.
 
It didn't take Morgan State long to respond, as the hosts scored four runs in the bottom frame of the fourth. Bobos doubled to left to score Aliya Ewell and Deborah Hamilton scored on a passed ball to tie the score at 2-2. Sweazie singled to right field to score Fijalkowski and Meikel Turner to give Morgan a 4-2 lead.
 
The Lady Bears went back to work, scoring two more runs in the sixth inning for the final score.
 
Game 2
The Spartans once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead, this time scoring two run in the first inning. Morgan State evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Ewell tripled to left field, scoring Sarah Tuzinski and Bobos singled through the left side to score Ewell.
 
Morgan State took the lead for good with three runs in the third. Tuzinski scored on a single hit by Melissa Paz to give Morgan its first lead. Turner then singled up the middle to drive in two more runs and up the lead to 5-2.
 
The Lady Bears would add their sixth and final run came in the fifth inning when Turner doubled to score Ewell.
 
Ewell went 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three runs and an RBI, while Turner finished 2-for-3 with a game-high 3RBIs. Tuzinski was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, as Ewell, Turner and Tuzinski accounted for six of Morgan State's eight hits.
 
Brooke Bond led the Spartans with two hits and a run scored.
 
Mikayla Barnard improved to 3-0 on the mound this season for the Lady Bears. She tallied three strikeouts and allowed two walks, two runs on six hits in four innings of work. Rundlett earned the save after surrendering a hit and a walk, while throwing three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
 
Norfolk State pitcher Cam Anderson fell to 4-3 on the season with the loss. Anderson was charged with five runs on five hits and gave up a walk and struck out two batters in 2.2 innings pitched.
 
Morgan State will take to the road for the first time this season when it travels to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason (6-0) in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at the George Mason Softball Complex.
