MEAC SUSPENDS SPRING FOOTBALL SEASON DUE TO RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH COVID-19

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 11, 2021) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced today that it has officially suspended its 2021 spring football season due to concerns related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule was set to start on Saturday, Feb. 20 and end on April 17 with the inaugural MEAC Football Championship game.
 
The MEAC's decision to cancel the spring football season does not prevent individual member institutions from participating in football competition. Institutions that wish to participate in spring football are allowed to do so taking into consideration what is best for their own student-athletes and in compliance with their local and state requirements. 

"While it was a difficult decision, we ultimately believe it is the right one for our member institutions and their student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans," MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas said. 
 
"Morgan has decided not to compete during this spring 2021 football season. Our decision is centered on the health and safety concerns for our student-athletes and advice of our medical professionals," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Edward Scott.  "Our focus remains dedicated to making the best decisions for Morgan Athletics based on the available information and the guidance of our medical professionals as we continue to navigate this global pandemic.  While this decision is disappointing, we are committed to supporting our football student-athletes as they prepare for the upcoming fall 2021 season."  
 
The University originally planned to have a four-game schedule with limited travel for these programs.
 
MSU was scheduled to play its first game on Feb. 20 against Delaware State at Hughes Stadium. It had set a four-game schedule for the spring, with a pair of home and away contests against the Hornets and Howard University. 

The Bears will move forward with a traditional spring practice campaign next month to prepare for the 2021 fall season. 
 
Members of the team will remain enrolled in classes, either virtually or in-person, as full-time students at Morgan State.  The team members will also retain access to facilities and support services in accordance with NCAA rules, ensuring that student-athletes remain on track academically and developmentally.      

Morgan will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure we are making the safest and most informed decisions as it relates to our athletic students, staff and community.
