Redd’s Double-Double Powers Morgan Past Navy, 71-50

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Dec. 2, 2021)-The Morgan State women's basketball team traveled to Maryland's Capital City and did something it hasn't done since February 21, 1984 – come away with a victory.

Behind Dahnye Redd's double-double of 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, the Lady Bears defeated host Navy, 71-50 in a non-conference game on Thursday evening at Alumni Hall.

The win was a season-best fourth straight for the Lady Bears (4-4), who have now won two in a row over the Mids and improved to 9-7 all-time in the series. The victory was also the first for Morgan State in Annapolis, since a 62-59 victory back in 1984, thus ending a four-game losing skid at Alumni Hall.

Navy fell to 2-6 with the loss and had its season-long losing streak extended to four.

Redd shot 9-of-14 and added a game-high three assists and a steal in the win. Charlene Shepherd came off the bench and connected on 5-of-10 from the floor to finish with 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds and recording a game-high three blocks.

Morgan State also received strong performances Ashia McCalla, who finished with eight points, tallied a game-high four assists and a game-high three steals. Emily Jones shot 4-for-6 to finish with a season-best eight points and totaled three rebounds and two assists.

The Lady Bears, who led wire to wire, scored the game's first seven points and held a 14-10 lead after a quarter of play.

Morgan State used an 8-0 run with Redd scoring five of the points to begin the second quarter, as the guests upped its cushion to 12 points at 22-10 with 8:09 left in the first half.

A jumper by Sydne Watts at the 5:34 mark, gave Navy its first points of the period, as it trailed 22-12. Morgan State countered with a 10-1 run, capped off by a layup by Taylor Addison to increase the Lady Bears' lead to 19 points at 32-13 with 57 seconds left. Morgan State led 34-17 at the intermission.

The Lady Bears shot 46 percent (29-of-63) for the game and was 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line. The hosts finished 16-of-52 (30.8 percent) and knocked down 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) from the line.

Navy was led by Jennifer Coleman, who finished with a game-high 23 points and had a team-best nine rebounds. Coleman would also commit 10 of the Mids' 24 turnovers on the night.

Morgan State returns home to face Hofstra on Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House.
