Lady Bears Extend Winning Streak To Five; Defeat Hofstra, 58-46

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 6, 2021)-Dahnye Redd recorded 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and had a career- and game-high four blocked shots, while Taylor Addison also had 10 points and two steals to help Morgan State past visiting Hofstra, 58-46 in a non-conference game on Monday evening at Hill Field House.

The win was a season-long fifth straight for the Lady Bears, who improved to 5-4. Hofstra (3-4) dropped its second straight.

Charlene Shepherd came off the bench to also score 10 points, and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for Morgan State, which improved to 3-1 all-time against the Pride.

Morgan State jumped on Hofstra in the opening period, scoring eight consecutive points to take an 8-2 lead, then adding seven straight points to increase its lead to 15-4 on a layup by Shepherd with 1:47 left in the quarter. Addison hit a short jumper from the right side as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Bears a 19-7 lead after one quarter of play.

While the offense slowed a bit in the second quarter, Morgan State's defense didn't. The hosts would hold the Pride to just five points in the period and increased its lead to 29-12 at the intermission.

The Pride had been in a similar situation just two days prior in their overtime loss at fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member, Howard. Hofstra was limited to six points in the second quarter of that game and trailed by 13 at the break before outscoring Howard, 40-27 in the second half to force overtime.

After a three-pointer by Morgan State's Ashia McCalla gave the hosts an 18-point (34-16) advantage with 8:39 left in the third, Hofstra began its comeback. The Pride would use a 20-8 run over the next 10 minutes capped off by two free throws by Jakayla Brown to pull the guests within six points at 42-36 with 8:26 left in the contest.

The Pride would get no closer than six points, as Morgan State outscored Hofstra, 14-8 down the stretch to secure the win.

Hofstra was led by Brown, who scored a game-high 16 points, while Jaylen Hines added 10 and had a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.

The Pride shot 17-of-52 (33.7 percent) from the floor and was 3-of-12 (25 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Morgan State shot 41 percent (23-of-56) for the game and like the Pride, was also 3-for-12 (25 percent) from three-point range. Both squads went to the line 12 times and connected on nine free throws for 75 percent.

Morgan State returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 when they travel down Cold Spring Lane to face Loyola Maryland. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
