Delaware State Defeats Morgan State In MEAC Quarterfinal Round

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 19, 2021)-Morgan State had its 2021 season come to an end at the hands of second-seeded Delaware State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-16) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Quarterfinal match on Friday evening at Howard University's Burr Gymnasium.
 
Karen Cordero and Sydney Lewis each had nine kills to lead the Hornets (24-3, 12-2 MEAC), who advance to Saturday's semifinal match at 8 p.m. against the winner of Coppin State and Norfolk State. Malgorzata Anderson finished with 19 assists, while Jasmal Cruz recorded a team-high nine digs.
 
Morgan State, which entered the contest as the seventh-seed, finished the season 5-24 overall, 3-11 in the MEAC.
 
Mackenzie Jefferson led the Lady Bears with a match-high 20 assists and a match-high 12 digs to record a double-double. All-MEAC Rookie Team selection, Madison Grace and Makila Billingsley each added six kills.  
 
The Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set, before Morgan State countered with a 5-2 spurt to pull within 8-5, capped off by an attack error by Delaware State. Back-to-back kills by Grace brought Morgan State within 12-9, but the Hornets countered with seven straight points to increase their lead to 19-9. A kill by Hoges ended the Hornets' run at 8-0, as Morgan trailed 20-10. The Lady Bears would score four straight points to cut the deficit to 20-13. That would be as close as Morgan would get, eventually falling 25-15.
 
A kill by Hiciano gave Morgan State a 6-5 lead, but the Hornets scored the next five points, then scored another six straight points in part of an 11-2 run to take a 16-8 advantage in Set 2. The Hornets would hold Morgan State scoreless for another spurt, this time for a 7-0 run to increase their cushion to 24-10, before winning 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Hornets broke a 2-2 tie, scoring six consecutive points to take an 8-2 lead. Morgan State used an 11-6 run to pull within a point at 14-13 on a kill by Billingsley. Delaware State regrouped and scored the next six points to take a 20-13 lead. A kill by Hiciano cut the Hornets' lead to 21-15, but Delaware State scored four of the final five points of the set, including three straight to earn a 25-16 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
 
Delaware State hit .333 for the match, finishing with 38 kills and 10 attack errors on 84 attempts. The Hornets also recorded seven service aces and had four serving errors.
 
The Lady Bears finished with 26 kills on 83 attempts and had 17 attack errors to finish with an attack percentage of .108 as a team. Morgan State was also hurt by its serving. The Lady Bears committed nine service errors and had just one ace, which was served up by Alyssa Sampson.
