Late Surge Pushes Bears Past James Madison, 80-73

HARRISONBURG, Va. (Jan. 3, 2021) – Junior guard De'Torrion Ware had 18 points with four rebounds off the bench, and Troy Baxter added 15 points as Morgan State rallied to beat James Madison 80-73 on Sunday.

Head coach Kevin Broadus and Morgan State (4-2) grabbed its second win over a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent and recorded its first win in 10 tries against the Dukes. The Bears dropped Delaware (65-59) almost two weeks ago in Newark, Delaware.

Ware, a Jacksonville State transfer, went 7 of 17 from the field, including 3 for 9 from 3-point territory. Baxter scored 11 of his 15 points (4-11 FG) in the second half and added five rebounds and a block. Junior Trevor Moore scored 11 points with three assists, and junior Sherwyn Devonish chipped in 10 points (4-6 FG).

Matt Lewis, CAA Preseason Player of the Year, led James Madison (3-4) with a game-high 21 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists, while Justin Amadi finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Julien Wooden scored nine points for the Dukes, who lost their second consecutive game.

The key Morgan's victory was closing the game on a 14-2 run over the final 2 minute stretch. JMU's Jalen Hodge's 3-pointer with 3:20 remaining gave the Dukes a 71-66 cushion, but the Bears would not go away. Devonish hit a jumper, and a steal by sophomore Tahj-Malik Campbell led to a fastbreak layup by junior Sharone Wright to trim the Dukes lead to 71-70 with 2:23 left to go.

The Bears held JMU to just a single field goal down the stretch. A jumper by Matt Lewis with 46 seconds remaining pulled the Dukes to with a basket, trailing 75-73. But the Bears closed the game by converting 5 for 6 from the charity stripe.

The game was evenly played for the most part, but the Dukes faltered at the foul line, converting 14 of 24 free throws.

Morgan State scored 24 points off 18 turnovers by the Dukes and held a 43-39 advantage on the glass, including 18 offensive rebounds.

The Bears outscored the Dukes in bench points by a 35-16 margin, and held a 34-18 advantage in fast break points.

Morgan State held an 11 point lead midway in the opening half after Ware buried a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 27-16 lead (10:28). The Dukes responded with a 13-0 run, punctuated with a dunk by Matt Lewis to help JMU regain the lead at 29-27 at the 5:28 mark.

The Bears went into the halftime break trailing 38-35.

Zach Jacobs scored on a layup to help JMU take its largest lead of the night at 48-39 with 17:56 to play.

The Bears continued to battle and began chipping away and found their rhythm, while the Dukes went cold.

JMU shot 56 percent (14-25) in the first half, but was limited to just 12 of 31 shooting in the second half (38 percent). Meanwhile, the Bears finished the game shooting 38 percent (27-70) from the field and had 14 more shot attempts than the Dukes.
