FAIRFAX, VA – Ten student-athletes from six different Morgan State Athletics programs were honored as 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine, the publication announced Thursday morning.
As the name denotes, this edition is a part of our quarter-century legacy of recognizing outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Morgan State's 10 honorees include: junior Oguzhan Ceylan (men's tennis) , junior Serhii Kharchev (men's tennis), junior Sebastian Lopez (men's tennis), senior Nihit Rawal (men's tennis), junior Touri Holmes (bowling), senior Rachel Daugherty (softball), junior Maya McIntyre (softball), sophomore Jourdan Wallace (women's tennis), sophomore Miazzaiah Rose (women's track), and r-sophomore Devan Hebron (football).
Morgan State's honorees hail from five different states and four countries.
Morgan State saw 10 student-athletes honored in 2020 after receiving 12 honors in 2019 and 10 in 2018.
In addition to their athletic ability, the students named 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students of color who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, are at least a sophomore academically, and have been active on their campuses or in their communities. Of the close to 1,000 scholar athletes nominated, one male and one female athlete will be selected as Sports Scholar of the Year. The following student-athletes from Morgan State University made the list.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine - formerly Black Issues in Higher Education - dedicates an edition every year honoring student-athletes for their commitment to excellence. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program began in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who reflect the values of Arthur Ashe, Jr.
