NORFOLK, Va. (March 6, 2020)-Morgan State senior guard
Chelsea Mitchell was named to the All-MEAC first team and junior guard
Dahnye Redd was named to the All-MEAC third team, while less than 24 hours after recording his 400th career coaching victory, fourth-year head coach Ed Davis was named MEAC Coach of the Year, as announced by the league office on Friday.
Â
The all-conference honors are voted on by the head coaches and sports information director in the league.
Â
Mitchell and Redd become the fourth and fifth all-conference selections under Davis. Mitchell and Redd's selections, also mark the 14th year out of the last 15, that Morgan State has had a player named to the all-conference team.
Â
"It's nice to be recognized as one of the top players in the conference," said Mitchell. "At the end of the day, I do what I do for the girls and my family. I want to make history, and that's winning a championship with my team."
Â
A native of Columbia, Md., Mitchell started all 29 games for the Lady Bears and led the team in both scoring (15.5) and rebounding (9.7). She finished third in assists (38) and blocks (11). Mitchell reached double figures in scoring 25 times and rebounding 13 times. She scored a career-best 26 points at Howard (2/1) and had a career-high 17 rebounds against Delaware State (2/24). Mitchell finished with a MEAC-leading 13 double-doubles and was ranked fourth in the nation in steals (104) and seventh in steals per game (3.59).
Â
Mitchell earned four MEAC Co-Player of the Week selections, two Co-Defensive Player and a Player of the Week honor this season. She also earned the
College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week award.
Â
Mitchell was joined on the All-MEAC first team by MEAC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Chanette Hicks of Norfolk State, Amaya Scott (Bethune-Cookman), Chance Graham (Coppin State) and Paulina Afriyie (North Carolina Central).
Redd averaged 13 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to end the regular season second on the team in both categories. She led the team in blocks with 20, including a season-high four at Norfolk State (2/15). Redd reached double figures in scoring 20 times and had seven double digit rebound games. The Darby, Pa. native, scored a season-high 26 points at Saint Peter's (11/26) and pulled down a season-best 14 rebounds at Delaware State (1/4).
Â
Joining Redd on the MEAC third team were Daniella Hatcher (Bethune-Cookman), Sharajah Collins (Delaware State), Jayla Thornton (Howard) and Deja Winters (North Carolina A&T).
Â
For Davis, this is the first MEAC honor, while at Morgan State and the second of his career. Davis, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the Lady Bears, also earned the honor during the 2003-04 season, when he was the head coach at Delaware State.
Â
This year Davis guided Morgan State to a second-place tie in the regular season standings and a No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament. It's the program's highest seed since the Lady Bears were the No. 2 seed heading into the 2010-11 MEAC Tournament. The 16 wins are the most since the 2010-11 squad won 17 games and the 12-4 MEAC mark matches that of the 2009-10 campaign for the best league record, while also tying the 1999-2000 team (12-6) for the school record for most MEAC victories.
Â
Morgan State earned a non-conference road win over Marshall and went 10-1 at home this season. Davis becomes just the second MSU women's basketball coach to earn MEAC Coach of the Year honors, joining the late Donald Beasley, who received it during the 2006-07 season.
 Â
The Lady Bears, who enter next week's MEAC Tournament as the third-seed, return to action on Thursday, March 12, when they face No. 6 Delaware State in a MEAC quarterfinal game. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
Â
The two teams split the season series, each winning on their home floor. The Hornets won the MEAC opener 69-61 in Dover, Del. (1/4), while Morgan State returned the favor with a 61-41 victory in Baltimore (2/24).
Morgan State trails the all-time series against Delaware State, 36-44. The Lady Bears are also 1-4 all-time in the MEAC Tournament against the Hornets. The two teams last met in the semifinal round of the 2008 MEAC Tournament, which the Hornets won 67-49 on March 13, 2008 in Raleigh, N.C. Morgan State's lone win over Delaware State was an 81-70 quarterfinal victory during the 1993 tournament in Norfolk.
