Mitchell Named First-Team BOXTOROW All-American

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 30, 2020)-Morgan State senior guard Chelsea Mitchell was named to the BOXTOROW Division I HBCU Women's All-American First Team on Monday as announced by BOXTOROW.com. Mitchell becomes the second Morgan State women's basketball player to receive the honor since its inception in 2012.

Last season Adre'onia Coleman also earned first-team BOXTOROW honors, to become the program's first All-American.

Chanette Hicks of Norfolk State was named BOXTOROW Player of the Year, while Vanessa Blair-Lewis of Bethune-Cookman was named BOXTOROW Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Mitchell, who earned four MEAC Co-Player of the Week selections, two MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week awards, a MEAC Player of the Week honor, and a College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week award this season, also garnered All-MEAC first team accolades.

A native of Columbia, Md., Mitchell started all 30 games and led the team in scoring (15.6), rebounding (9.7) and total steals (105). She posted a MEAC leading 14 double-doubles on the season and reached double figures in scoring 26 times, including a career-high 26 points at Howard (2/1). Mitchell would also grab a career-best 17 rebounds against Delaware State (2/24).

Mitchell helped the Lady Bears close out the regular season tied for second in the MEAC standings and earn the No. 3 seed in the MEAC Tournament. She scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in a quarterfinal win over Delaware State (3/12), in what was the final NCAA Division I college basketball game played of the 2019-20 season due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The win matched a season-high five-game winning streak and marked the first time Morgan State advanced to the MEAC semifinal round since the 2006-07 season. The Lady Bears would have faced second-seeded Norfolk State on Friday, March 13.

She finished the season leading the MEAC in rebounding (4.9) and offensive rebounding per game at 4.9, was second in scoring (15.6), second in steals (3.5), third in field goal percentage (.505), fifth in defensive rebounding (4.9) and 14th in free throw percentage (.655).

Mitchell ranked third in the nation in offensive rebounding (146), sixth nationally in total steals (105) and seventh in steals per game (3.50). She ended her career ranked eighth on the steals chart at Morgan State with 184.
