Mitchell Earns Co-MEAC Player And Co-Defensive Player Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 4, 2020)-The weekly honors keep coming for Morgan State senior guard Chelsea Mitchell. A day after being selected as College Sports Madness Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, Mitchell received two more honors, when she was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week, as well as MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

It's the sixth and seventh MEAC weekly honors this season for Mitchell, who has previously earned MEAC Defensive (11/26), Co-Defensive Player (11/12) and MEAC Co-Player of the Week (12/17, 1/7, 1/28) honors.

Mitchell shares this week's co-player honor with Bethune-Cookman's Kiana Williams and the co-defensive honor with Coppin State's Chance Graham. Florida A&M's Kayla Massop was named MEAC Rookie of the Week.

"It's an honor to be named to both awards at the same time," said Mitchell. "I wasn't even expecting to even be picked for either this week because of us only playing one game for the week."

The Columbia, Md. native put together a monster game in the Lady Bears' lone contest of the week at Beltway rival Howard on Saturday. She poured in a game-high 26 points on 12-for-21 shooting (.571) from the floor and recorded nine of her game-high 14 rebounds on the defensive end to record her MEAC-leading 10th double-double of the season. Mitchell also tied her collegiate career high with eight steals, falling two steals shy of recording the program's second triple-double on the Division I level.

Her 26 points were a new Morgan State career-high, surpassing the 25 points she scored earlier this season at Delaware State. Mitchell's collegiate career-high of 28 points came during her junior season (2017-18) at Lander University.

"I did not even know how close I was to a triple-double or that I was doing that well," said Mitchell on her performance at Howard. "I'm constantly working hard and just enjoying the game with my team and most of all trying to win every game we come into."
