Bears Drop 72-65 Decision to Coppin State in Crosstown Rivalry

BALTIMORE, Md. (February 29, 2020) -- The Morgan State men's basketball team suffered a 72-65 setback against crosstown rival Coppin State Saturday at Hill Field House.

Morgan State dropped to a 15-15 overall record and are 9-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Eagles (10-20, 6-9) avenged a 50-48 loss to the Bears on Jan. 25 and now have ten victories this season, their most since the 2013-14 season.

The Bears went on a 7-0 run to pull within 67-65 with two minutes remaining, but after a missed three by David Syfax, the Eagles were able to seal the game at the free-throw line.

Koby Thomas finished with a game- and career-high 28 points (14 in the first half) and eight rebounds to the Eagles. Dejuan Clayton added 13 and Kamar McKnight chipped in 11.

Coppin State extended its series lead against the Bears to 61-33.

Senior guard Stanley Davis (14 points, five rebounds) believed the Eagles three-pointers and fouls played a big role in the second half.

"They hit their threes... They drove and kicked," Davis said. "The first half they didn't hit anything. We were one shot rebounding. [But, in the second half] they got second-chance points, and they hit threes."

The Eagles shot 5-for-12 from three and 14-for-19 from the free-throw line in the second half. They also finished with nine second-chance points.

Although Morgan dominated the first half and held the Eagles to 29 percent from the field (9-31) and shot 45 percent themselves (14-31), the Bears could not build off of their 32-25 lead at the half.

Coppin shot 50 percent (14-28) and held the Bears to 33 percent (10-30) in the second half.

"We forgot what got us this far and we're better than that," said head coach Kevin Broadus. "We got caught up into [individual play] and didn't play defense."

In the first half, the Bears were able to capitalize off the Eagles cold start to go on a 10-3 run to start the game.

Morgan would continue applying pressure and later build their largest lead of 10 (20-10) with nine minutes remaining.

However, Coppin was able to pull within one after a 13-4 run with three minutes remaining put the score at 23-24 capped off by a Thomas dunk.

But the Bears would close the half on an 8-2 run to put them ahead 32-25.

Sophomore Malik Miller ended the half with a double-double for the Bears by posting 10 points and 14 rebounds. Morgan State outrebounded Coppin by a commanding 30-12 margin in the first half.

Miller finished with a team-high 14 points and game- and career-high 18 rebounds.

Morgan outrebounded the Eagles by 20 (50-30) but it wasn't enough as they had 27 turnovers allowing the Eagles to score 26 points off of miscues.

"It was piss poor," Broadus said of the turnovers. "For a team that didn't press us, the turnovers were terrible. 27 turnovers [are] not acceptable."

After a tough loss, the Bears will be back at practice Sunday morning.

"We got to be tougher," Davis said.

Next up for the Bears are the Norfolk State Spartans (13-15, 9-4) March 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Hill Field House in the MEAC regular season finale.
