LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2020)-The Morgan State softball team scored 12 runs on 12 hits and recorded 11RBI, as the Lady Bears cruised to a 12-2 non-conference victory over Stetson in five innings, in the opener of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic on Friday afternoon at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The win was the first of the season for the Lady Bears, who improved to 1-4, while Stetson fell to 5-5 on the season. Morgan State's victory also ended a five-game losing skid to the Hatters, who prior to today's win had outscored the Lady Bears, 46-2.
Inside The Numbers
- The Morgan State offense broke out Friday afternoon to post season highs in hits (12), runs (12) and RBI (11).
- The Lady Bears hit their first homers of the season, finishing with three on the day. Haylee Bobos, Amy Pacheco and Ellen Ebbers all recorded a homer.
- Pacheco led the Lady Bears going 2-for-3 with 3RBI and a run, while Bobos finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and 3RBI. Ebbers and Cayla Sweazie each were 2-for 3 at the plate with a run. Ebbers also had 2RBI.
- Mikayla Barnard (1-1) recorded her first win of the season. She pitched a complete game, surrendering two runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
- Stetson pitcher Lauren Klein (1-3) was charged with the loss.
- Lizzie Shubert went 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI to lead Stetson. Blake Crews was 2-for-2 and Riley Russell finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.
How It Happened:
- Morgan State struck first when Haylee Bobos homered to left field in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. It was the Lady Bears' first homerun of the season.
- The Lady Bears increased their lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the second. Meikel Turner singled to right field to score Cayla Sweazie. Amy Pacheco homered to left field to score Turner and put Morgan State up 4-0.
- Stetson plated its first run of the game in the top of the third inning, when Lizzie Shubert doubled to left field to score Riley Russell and cut the Morgan State advantage to 4-1.
- Morgan State went to work in the bottom portion of the third, as the Lady Bears' bats exploded for seven runs to take an 11-1 lead over the Hatters. Ellen Ebbers provided Morgan State's third homer of the game and her first of the season, when she went deep to center field to score Deborah Hamilton for a 6-1 lead. Jalian Young singled to left field to score Kyley Fijalkowski. Katariina Delph reached on a throwing error and advanced to second which allowed Turner to score. The Lady Bears increased their lead to 9-0 when Young scored after a dropped fly ball by the left fielder. Bobos then stepped to the plate and drove in two more runs when she doubled to right center, giving Morgan State an 11-1 advantage.
- The Hatters got back on the board in the top of the fourth inning, when Russell singled back to the pitcher to score Nikki Steiniger to cut the deficit to 11-2.
- Pacheco rounded out the scoring when she doubled to left field in the bottom of the fourth to score Turner and give the Lady Bears the 12-2 victory.
