Bears Comeback Falls Short in Loss to West Virginia Tech, 73-67

BALTIMORE, Md. (December 19, 2020) – Morgan State men's basketball battled down the stretch, but ultimately came up short in a 73-67 loss in Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears record falls to 2-2 for the season, while the visiting Golden Bears improved to 4-4.

Junior Malik Miller paced the Bears with 19 points on a 6-for-13 shooting night and also finished with a team-high seven rebounds and four steals.

Junior Trevor Moore and senior Lagio Grantsaan scored 13 points apiece, while junior Sharone Wright chipped in eight points with five rebounds.

Both teams started the game off with a number of miscues that led to empty possessions. There were 10 turnovers by the time the horn sounded for the first media timeout with WVU Tech leading 3-1. Morgan would get its first basket off a Troy Baxter dunk that was part of an 8-3 spurt. Junior Sherwyn Devonish's layup with 12:22 left in the half gave the Bears a 9-6 lead.

WVU Tech responded when they went on a 12-0 run led by a Juvante Hayes (13 points) layup and it was finished off by a corner 3-pointer by Tamon Scruggs to give the visiting Golden Bears an 18-9 lead with just under nine minutes left in the half. Hayes scored 7 of his 13 points during the run.

Moore and Wright hit back-to-back threes as the Bears used an 11-4 run to trim the Golden Bears' lead to 22-20. Once again, WVU Tech increased its lead when they used a 10-1 run to take a 32-23 lead. Junior Moel Camara capped off the half with a pull-up jumper just before the buzzer as the Bears went into the break trailing 32-25.

WVU Tech came out hot in the second half and held a double-figure lead throughout most of the half. The Golden Bears held its largest lead of the game after back-to-back 3-pointers by Andreas Jonsson (13 points) and Scruggs, capped by a layup by Thomas Hailey to extend the lead to 57-41 with just over eight minutes left in the contest.

However, Morgan State wasn't done battling yet. A pair of free throws by Moore and a layup by Devonish were part of a 23-11 run by the Bears. Miller hit two free throws to trim WVU Tech's lead to 71-67 with 23 seconds left, but the Bears' comeback came up short as Jonnson hit final two points of the night from the free throw line.

WVU Tech matched a season-best three's made, finishing 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Tamon Scruggs led the way with 19 points including five made treys. Scruggs also pulled down a team-high six rebounds to go with four steals.

Darrin Martin posted a double-double with 18 points (7-8 FT) and 11 assists.
