Bears Drop Howard, Extend To 3-Game Winning Streak

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 1, 2020) – Morgan State's inside dominance turned out to be the difference as the Bears extended to a 3-game conference winning streak for the first time since the 2017-18 season.

Malik Miller had a career-high 19 points (8-13 FG) and eight rebounds, Troy Baxter scored 18 points and Morgan State broke open a close game with a run early in the second half to beat Howard 89-83 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Saturday at The Burr Gymnasium.

Stanley Davis added 14 points and four rebounds, while Sherwyn Devonish-Prince had 13 points and six assists for the Bears (12-12, 6-3).

Howard (2-21, 0-8) had five players finish in double-figures. Nate Garvey led the Bison with 19 points (5-9 3FG), while Wayne Bristol Jr. added 17 points. Zion Cousins and Charles Williams had 15 and Khalil Robinson chipped in 14 points and a game-high nine assists.

Howard had no answer for the Bears' inside game and were outrebounded 37-22. That led to 44 points in the paint and 15 second-chance points for the Bears.

Jamar Brown opened the second half by scoring the first three baskets during a 12-3 run. Davis' 3-pointer followed by another layup by Brown gave the Bears a 55-44 advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining.

The lead ballooned to 16 points after Miller hit a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 64-48 lead with 11:08 remaining.

Brown used his 6-foot-9, 250-pound frame to bully his way to scoring 10 points all in the second half.

Howard battled back to make interesting down the stretch as the Bison reeled off a 12-2 run and cut the lead to 79-75 when Garvey buried a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:11 remaining. Zion Cousins recorded back-to-back blocks and finished with a jump hook in the lane to trim the lead to 80-77. Morgan State called timeout with 48 seconds left to go.

Following the timeout, Devonish fed Baxter for a backdoor sledgehammer dunk to put the Bears up 82-77.

Garvey responded by hitting another corner 3-pointer to pull the Bison to within 6, down 86-80, but Morgan State ended up salting the game away from the free throw line where they converted 7-of-8 to finish the game.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead. Devonish found Troy Baxter wide open near the baseline for a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 13-5 lead.

Howard used a 12-4 run to get right back into the game and tied the game on a 3-pointer by Charles Williams 17-17.

Garvey hit a 3-pointer to give the Bison its first lead of the night at 30-29.

The teams traded leads over the remaining minutes of the first half before Miller hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to give Morgan State a 43-41 lead at the break.

Bear Notes
● As many teams have done since Kobe Bryant's death, the Bears took a 24-second shot clock violation and the Bison followed with an 8-second backcourt violation to honor Kobe, who wore the numbers 24 and 8 during his career.

● Legendary Georgetown Hoyas head coach John Thompson Jr. was in attendance.
